Anyone ever download an unknown map from some random site or archive for Quake that turns out to be really good? Post them here! There are tons of maps out there that receive no attention, so this would be a good place to show them.

I'll start with one that I found in an /IDGames Quake archive. It's called "Romper Stomper", by Dylan (Stomper.zip). I have never even heard this map mentioned anywhere, and a google search returns nothing about this map or the author. The map is an IDBase theme with 2 levels and underground walkways. The architecture is simple but effective, the texture usage is fantastic, and the gameplay is superb. I guess the author just didn't do a good job of pimping his work!

This thread can be about any type of map, DM or Singleplayer, and you don't have to post a screenshot or as much information as I did. It's only optional. Also, if you can't find a download link at all, upload the map (preferably with a readme file), to www.filebeam.com - It's one of the best file upload sites.

Qurnel's Frag

http://qurnel.quaddicted.com/files/frag.zip

Qurnel is a well known mapper but I've never seen this map on any server. It looks good using Unreal theme and its great for FFA although r_speeds are a bit high so some players may experience fps drops.

I suggest my http://shub-hub.quaddicted.com (pw: ilovetheshubhub). Not only most maps are there but also once it is there it won't be not available due to auto-deletion.

Sounds good.

I will post about more unknown maps later. Common guys, join in and show some maps!

Sorry for double post, but I have a few more maps! I found a mapper who is relatively unknown, or at least I think. His name is Harb!ngeR, and two of his maps stand out to me: "Quake 1 Arena, Deathmatch One" (q1adm1.zip), and "Strength of Ten Men" (ten_men.zip).

"Quake 1 Arena - Deathmatch One" is a remake of the first DM map in Quake3. Normally I don't like remakes of this map, but I made an exception once I loaded this thing up! This map has a whole new take on the original version, with more slopes and curvy architecture. The textures are very unique, but make up a new theme that I think works quite well. The gameplay is surprisingly better than the original Q3 version.

Download Q1adm1.zip:

The next map, "Strength of Ten Men", is yet another unique theme. I don't know where these textures came from, but I like them. This map has a fast and furious feel to it, but there are a few long "relaxing" stretches. There is a good amount of Z-axis fighting, and RocketJumps can be used in a few places. Might be a good map for a sever...

Download Ten_Men.zip:
http://shub-hub.quaddicted.com/files/maps_multiplayer/ten_men.zip

Harb!nger has a web page here, which contains more of his maps: http://elf.planetquake.gamespy.com/tf.shtml
Among those maps is a 6-map Singleplayer campaign titled "Escape", which I've never heard of before. I did a search on all the big SP review sites, and found nothing. It's not even on the Underworldfan's review site. Indeed, this pack is unknown. I will probably make another post about this pack with screenshots later on.

Thanks for providing the space for us all in the Shub-hub, Spirit.

Those maps are popular though... This is a thread for unknown maps! I've already played all those maps you've mentioned many times (and yes, they are good). This thread is more about giving some maps attention that have not already received it. I'm tired of seeing the same old maps circulate in the Quake community. I know you have a massive archive of maps like me, Trinca. You must know of some maps that the majority of the Quake community is not aware of! The maps don't have to be a perfect 10/10 score to make it in this thread - they just have to be good enough to deserve the attention they don't receive.

AlkDM02, a map that disappeared off the face of the planet, has now resurfaced! Multiplayer Quake reviewed the map a very long time ago, but has since become a broken link after the site relaunched. The map is literally nowhere to be found. I e-mailed Kona last week, however, and he was nice enough to send me a copy! I've uploaded it to the shub-hub for the rest of you.

The map is basically 4 big detailed rooms connected by various hallways with stairs leading to the higher parts. It uses Rubicon textures, which work pretty well I think. The map is great with bots. The review over at MPQ talks about bad r_speeds in the map, but with modern machines there shouldn't be any problems. I personally haven't noticed any hits in the fps at all (notice the 75fps count in the screenshots), and I don't even have a rig that is all that beefy. I even have cell shading, vertex lighting, and all the extra features of Qrack turned on to full without any slowdowns.

That's odd... Works fine here in regular DM in Qrack. I would tell you to e-mail the author, but the map was made in '99. Who knows where the author is now.

Lol, believe it or not, I already had your map in my collection. xD

Actually, I've had all the maps mentioned in my collection already. They are unknown though, and I don't care if I already have them or not. This thread is about giving them some attention; it doesn't matter what I have personally.

You know, I was thinking of mentioning this map as well. It's called "The Four Horsemen", by Forrest aka Drako. It was only made in 2006. I've uploaded a version with a readme file to the Shub-hub for you all. This map really is a superb duel map. It is visually impressive as well as fun to play. Here are some screenshots:

I thought of some maps that I believe have been forgotten over time. They are a series of three maps titled "Castlemania", and were created by Dan Proietti aka Danimal. People know him for his works such as Rapture1 and Rapture2, as well as a few maps for the "Dapak" series. The Castlemania maps - Cmania, Cmania2, and Cmania3 - are very basic levels, but have nice layouts. Although the architecture is basic, something about the texturing job and theme make these levels stand out above others. I don't often see a castle theme quite like these used so prominently in a map. The gameplay is also good, and bots play all three maps well.

Cmania:

Cmania2:

I have two more unknown maps. Double post again, I know; if more people would post unknown maps, I wouldn't have to post twice in a row like this!

The first map - Nvdm2a, has been in my collection for quite some time, but I have no idea where it came from. I did some google searches, with no matches. I did have the readme file, however. The title is "Atmosphere", and was created by Cameron "nventa" Scott. The map uses a mixed theme, which I normally disprove of, but for some reason it works well here. The map is smaller, and probably more suitable for 1vs1. The visuals are decent, and the gameplay is nice. There is a bit of Z-axis fighting.

Screenshot:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y226/l_hunter8/nvdm2a-1.jpg

Download from the Shub-Hub:
http://shub-hub.quaddicted.com/files/maps_multiplayer/Nvdm2a.zip

The next map is called the "Shrimp Arena" (Shrimp.bsp), by Rune Trasop aka VenoM. The only archive I've seen it in is the Quadaddicted archive, but without a readme file. I've uploaded it to the Shub-hub with a readme file. The map uses IKbase textures, which I'm not really a fan of. It is lacking a bit in the visuals department - although the map is nice and curvy. The lighting could have also used a bit of work. If you can get by the visuals, however, the map flows like a knife through butter. You can take any turn you like, and end up somewhere else. There are no dead ends or slow spots. If you are a fan of tight spaces like me, then this map is a whirl.

I wanted to post shots of maps like ruins, sm, rm and zed but then I realised they're not that unknown. The question is what is an unknown map? Do we post maps everyone knows but nobody plays? Hopefully these will be "unknown" to some people.

Good job posting Wolvdm1 Terrorhead. That's the first map in this thread that I didn't have!

In my opinion, any map that runs on servers regularly, is in everyone's collections, or displays many search results in google, do not really qualify for this thread. Don't try to think too hard about what is known and what is unknown, however. Just post what you want, and I'm sure you will find out in due course how unknown it is by the responses you get. Personally, my favorite maps are the ones that are almost nowhere to be found, but those types are very hard to come by. Just post anything you feel deserves more attention, really.
