(No, this is not about qw (shhhhhh))
But, for those out there that enjoy quake single player from time to time when there is no one to play, this thread is for you.
Speed Mapping
What is a speedmap? A Quake1 map made in about 100 minutes, usually single player, based off of a theme, and released in a pack with other speedmaps.
At the time of this writing, there have been 118 speedmap packs! I don't know how long this has been going, but with a pack coming out perhaps once every week to 2 weeks, you can see that there are a lot out there.
New to mapping? Speed maps can be a good way to learn. You can make a small simple map in about 2 hours, release it, and get some instant feedback. Lots of large, good maps started as speedmaps! (ask Trinca, he learned a lot through speedmapping)

Single Player
Well, you kill monsters. Its fun cause its quake!! Coop is fun too btw.
But, sometimes, its better to play these maps in a Netquake client.
The two most popular are Fitzquake and Joequake.
Fitz looks and feels just like the original glquake, but with new features.

Joequake is made to look and feel like fuh or ezquake, with hud and gfx options.

Quake done Quick
These guys are still at it! And wow, they're still mind boggling.
They have new contests fairly often and are always trying to improve their id runs. Well, they gave up one, e1m3 by Peter Horvath. He spent three months perfecting this run, and yes, it is perfect. Kills all monsters on easy and gets all secrets in 1:00. You have to see it to believe it.
*note, this is a .dem, so it won't play in a qw client, you must use a nq client like i listed above. also, sda uses dzip for all its files, get it here:

Also, its not too late to get into speedrunning! There are plenty of maps that remain unconquered, and new maps are comming out all the time. Ask ziel, he is now on the qdq records list after only a few weeks of running.
You might be wondering, why should I care about any of this q1sp maps? Well, these same mappers are also known to make mp qw maps as well! Why not support them now, and begin giving them feedback. One of them could make the next custom 4on4 map!
