i had this idea a while back that qw.nu could have a benchmark demo contest, where the submission which pushes the fps (on judges machine(s)) the lowest would get his demo included with nQuake.
anyone think this is a good idea?
rules would probably be: 30 seconds - 1 minute demo, qwd/qwz format, playable on an nquake installation without pak1.pak.
a sidenote: getting 32 ppl together for some phat demo recording would mean 32 contest entries, and with all the different povs, one of the players would push the fps the most..

Why would you want a demo that doesn't represent actual gameplay situations for benchmarking a newbie's gfx settings? Most games' benchmark demos go through 30 seconds of moderately gpu heavy material with varying combinations of effects used at the same time. These situations represent the bulk of all gameplay situations within game, but it is possible to get even lower fps than in the demo. I guess for qw we should be aiming for results where the computer can maintain at least 77 fps throughout. And before ezQuake graphics profiles are made better, we would have some aliases for quick graphics settings' changes. The funny thing is that there are still a lot of oldschool players with computers that can't really handle dm2 large with x players + y rockets. Would the next target level be 154..308?

308 is maxfps in nquake
and a benchmark demo is meant to make your computer cry

Hell, even my settings wouldn't hold anything close to 308 there, but in every normal game situation I can have steady 308, from xs4all ffa to 4on4.

we are looking for 2 different things obviously.
if someone wants to see if their settings can handle a game, they can just play a game and see if there were any probs
a benchmark demo is meant for ppl to check their settings against a situation that does not arise everyday, and can not easily be created. "what is the worst case scenario, does my computer hold up?"
that's what i want.

For benchmarks there's nothing wrong with the good old "overkill.qwd" demo for QW or the "bigass.dem" demo for NQ

hmm, i can find several thing that can be improved about the overkill demo. so i guess there's something wrong with it.

saying a mac is a pc is kinda like saying humans are animals.
it's true, but some people don't like thinking of it that way.

get one done at the next FTK, and we probably need a benchmark.cfg too, so we can compare results.
