Has anyone seen the announcement made yesterday? iD games are now being retailed on STEAM. I was a bit dissapointed as the server is not allowing old purchases on there, so there goes my RTCW+Q3 . BUT This could be good for the community! As more traffic will hopefully flow through, the only problem is there is no QW+open GL client packaged with the download. I don't see that happening .

This is really big news! I do believe that these old games will see a huge revival. [url=http://profile.xfire.com/johnnymullet][img]http://miniprofile.xfire.com/bg/sh/type/2/johnn

I don't think it will make a very big difference for Quakeworld, but perhaps for the other games in the series. I don't care if Joe Sixpack in the american desert downloads and starts Quake singleplayer from Steam. The people i care about download nQuake and join all the Quakeworld leagues currently going on. Editid Software apparently made a few announcements at Quakecon which you can read at ESR. Among them was a browser based Quake 3 Arena game which is supposed to be supported through in-game advertising. Imo they should stop wasting money on such shit (they still need to hire the new developers) and release the first three Quakes for free. :p Edit 2think i'll do a news post on this anyway as people might want to put up some money for this lovely game anyway. www.facebook.com/QuakeWorld

This is going to be sweet because I always wanted the original files that came with the game and have been too lazy to order the actual quake cd off the internet. Maybe this will help with my laziness and being a pirate of such a great game.

$9.95 for Quake and $4.95 for each missionpack.

They have bigger packages, which render the games cheap, but they lack a few games (mainly the popular ones). I'm glad they've got it all though, Spear of Destiny and Wolf 3D are featured on there. As well as Doom's sister Heretic and Hexen.
Although STEAM may be buggy and has done terrible thing to Valve games, they make a great access with hardly any downtime. It's becoming quite the outlet of games. I mean it takes 10 minutes to download a game. It's a great back-up. It makes CD's obsolete.
They should make world wide stores. :p

You can buy the full old boxes of Quake and its missionpacks for a similar price at eBay often. Fuck id, this is loveless moneymaking.

Thank you for your recent purchase. Quake is now available in your Steam "Games" window. I'm legit now!

fenris, could you let me know where steam placed the pak1.pak file?? so nQuake can look for it in the steam dir or whatever.

"With the recent release of iD's catalog on Steam, it appears DOSBox is being used to run the old DOS games for greater compatibility. According to a post on the Halflife2.net forums, however, this distribution does not contain a copy of the GPL license that DOSBox is distributed under, which violates the license. According to the DOSBox developers, they were not notified that it was being used for this release."

doesn't matter if they are notified though. only thing that matters is that it complies with gpl license..
kinda surprised to see that id breaks gpl though.

I'm blaming VALVe because I want my $60 back.
They've mostly fixed that stuff. Added the minimal amount of information needed to suffice through.
But there still may be a wrong, as the binary seems to be modified. The md5sum does not match up, and it looks for steam/steamclient.dll and if you don't have the dlls, it will direct you to their homepage to buy the game. Under the GPL (IIRC), you must distribute the source with the changes.

@ake vader:
making quake available on steam makes it as easy to install a legal copy of quakeworld, as installing an illegal one, if not simpler:
legal: step 1. buy quake off steam step 2. install nquake
pak1 should automagically be detected in steam dir, and nquake install should be as simple as "next next next"
illegal: step 1. install nquake step 2. click pak1.pak link during install step 3. find pak1.pak and download step 4. locate pak1.pak in nquake install and proceed with installation
sure, step 2-4 could be written as 1 step, but buying games from steam should not be that hard, and the pak file is automagically detected with the steam install. it is not if you download it yourself to wherever.

Right now if you want to explain to somebody how to get Quake setup properly, it will consist of:
1. download and install Steam 2. buy Quake through Steam 3. download and install nQuake
...if nQuake could automate 1 and 2, then the user would only have to be told to do 3. It can't get any more automated than that. So would it be possible for nQuake's wizard to automatically download and install Steam? Would it be possible for nQuake's wizard to ask for the necessary information in order to automatically relay it to Steam so that a legal version of Quake could be purchased?

sounds awfully high tech and would probably need cooperation from valve step 1 is possible to have in nquake, but not step 2. i could just replace the "Lost your Quake CD?" with a "Buy Quake on Steam for only $9.95" link.

can someone who purchased quake through steam download nquake v1.7b and see if it detects pak1.pak in steam dir?
if pak1.pak is detected somewhere else, rename that pak1.pak temporarily and restart the installer.
