All this talk about the Wargamez admin not being reachable and the servers now going down has made me wonder whether we could just perhaps rent a server? It might sound a bit utopian and I must admit I have absolutely no idea how much it would cost, but surely it can't be THAT expensive?
Personally I wouldn't object to donating a tenner or so every once in a while via something like paypal. We could select a trustworthy and experienced person to do the admining (Renzo perhaps?) and would no longer have to struggle with the above issues. Like I said... I have no idea about costs and I'm also a complete noob concerning the game-server administration, so maybe I am not seeing the problems connected to this approach. Sooo.. what do you think?

EDIT

Niomic created a handy 'ping table' at the QW Wiki for better overview:
QW Wiki

Please fill out your values there
If you don't understand the syntax, just write your values at the bottom of that page and we'll add add them.

Someone could also add qizmo pings up top like the example.

I must say that the QW community seems to have been lucky with all the free servers popping up every now and then. If you look at other games it is much more common to rent servers there. I don't think it would be nice to rely solely on paid servers, but for a crucial one ala Wargamez, it might be worth it depending on how much it costs. I think it might be quite expensive though, but if enough people would contribute...

My thoughts exactly! Wargamez is/was of interest to most of the European community. If it was some server in Hungary I'd shrug and say "c'est la vie", but Wargamez has been pretty vital to the QW scene in Europe in the last 2-3 years.

I've thought about renting a server for a long time, but all I've managed to do so far is to look at the prices. The cheapest servers in Europe are in Germany (http://www.netdirekt.de for example). Dybbuk.de servers are hosted in netdirekt so there is no point renting another server for QW there. The best option in Denmark (that I have found) is http://www.easyspeedy.dk. Pings to their network seem to be ok. My ping is about 23ms from Finland. Routing to easyspeedy seems to be partly similar as wargamez's routing so think it would be a good choice. Please test your ping to 82.103.143.253 or easyspeedy.dk so we can see if it would be worth renting a server there.

I'm at my parents house right now and their ISP is kinda shit, so it's hard for me to say. But from here: 55ms to wargamez, 52 to easyspeedy!

i have not pinged, im not at home. but even if it is nice, is it affordable for the qw community? i mean, its 49€ per month, almost 600€/yr. if we could get that amount of €, isnt there somehting better to do with it? i mean, pay 49€/month to have less 10ms... fortunatly we still have enough servers through europe - with low pings.

Ofc if its better for almost everyone and if enough ppl would donate as much as 10€/year this would be possible. Who is willing to donate is the next question.
never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

Some of the costs could be covered with ads. XantoM already offered to help with qwdrama and I could do the same with quakeservers.net. Ads could be placed on this forum too.

im all for that. How much do you estimate ads would "give" per month?

If you are going to use Google Adsense make sure to use a referral to get the most out of it! (If the person who signup up does 100$ in 6 months the referrer gets a onetime $250.)

I would not estimate too much out of it. For the ads on the Shub-Hub (which obviously is way less covered/popular) I am at 25$ for 3 months, will be enough for the my cheap hosting. A collective qw.nu/qwdrama account might be able to do 20$ a month I think.
But too excited/eager people/clicks could get you kicked from Adsense.

Don't ever use flashy blinking images as ads, but I guess that's obvious.

Maybe ask the provider for sponsoring/cutting the price for advertising it.

The fate of wargamez is not yet decided it's "fatal" one. I was talking to Sassa yesterday and he said if the server "only" moves from another location, we'd get an access to it so we could update it when it is required.

Yes we could allow 12 Indian orphans to go to a good school for a year: There's always better things you can do with money.

But if I'm gonna spend money on QW, I can't see anything better to spend it on than a server. Even if Wargamez doesn't go down, fact is that the admin is incredibly hard to reach and the servers rarely get updated, constantly running outdated, buggy versions. Fact is also that Wargamez was down a couple of days ago and consequently there was no mixgame going on anywhere after like 21:00 CET. In a way it sure sounds ridiculous to pay money when speaking of milliseconds and computer games, I'll give you that. But on the other hand, almost all international clan wars and 95% of European mix 4on4s are played on Wargamez, duels and 2on2s aside. That server has been incredibly important to QW in Europe and I personally doubt that the consequences of Wargamez being discontinued can be summed up with a handful of players thinking "Oh well, doesn't matter, I'll just have 10 ms more".

i agree with soma, ~5 danish allround servers with good routing and updated software would be worth paying for.

Would give almost all Europeans =< 52ms, which is playable. Someone just need to collect those €600.

I don't agree whit half of you... Ping is kinde of important even if it is 10ms... But i got a solution to you all. If "we" got a "Leader" out here let him write some emails make some phones in case of SPONSORING 10 or more servers for the site. From my knowlage that i expired in Logitech i know that organised Communitys are in first place to be sponsored. And if you add the servers are for a Cup and you can easly make an commercial for the company i think that there wont be just 1 server company that would be interested in sucha community.

More ping reports are needed! It's not worth paying anything if most of the players don't get good ping and the servers will be empty 24/7. I'm especially interested about ping times from people with swedish Bredbandsbolaget connection. Also welcome are reports from UK, Russia, Germany and Finland. We'll see what happends with wargamez first and then decide if it's time to spend some money

From Nebula ADSL @ Helsinki, Finland min/max/avg 21/27/23. (wargamez 22/26/23)

From Eunet network @ Espoo,Finland min/avg/max/mdev = 20.291/20.763/22.569/0.423 ms (wargamez 19.780/20.188/20.653/0.224 ms). (I'm able to put a qizmo here)

From another shell (Elisa network, Espoo) average 42.6ms compared to 37.6ms to wargamez.
