I need help. I've got this old game in my head that I used to play alot around 8-10 years ago. I can't remember the name, or even the console(s) it was available on. Here are the few things I do remember;
- The gameplay is in zero-gravity, and you're in control of a spaceship. - You explore a 2d map in a similar fashion of Metroid/Castlevania. - The first spaceship you start with is a pod-like thing that fires single bullets and has virtually no shields (dies in one hit I think). - You gain upgrades to pretty much every aspect of your ship by collecting items found as you explore the map (can't really remember details here). There may have been some money-system in place that allowed you to buy upgrades. - If you take enough damage to die in your upgraded ship, your original pod-like ship launches from the explosion and you can start over by collecting items again. - This is a big maybe; the game may have had 'pod' somewhere in the name. I'm not at all certain about this though. - New evidence has come to light that my old friend owned a NES, so that might be the console of choice. Don't count on it 100% though, since I'm pretty sure he also had some sort of SEGA.

Sounds like Cybernoid (1 or 2) to me, I had it on the Amstrad CPC or Atari ST though

Nope. Cybernoid has gravity, and the controls are much more responsive (and unrealistic). This game is taking place in zero-gravity - that is, if I stopped throttling, and just turned, my ship would keep going in the same direction it was heading in, and it would just rotate. Think asteroids. Also, that game appears to be a bit more shoot-em-up than the one I remember

Nah, once again, too much shooter, not enough "strategy".
I think I remembered how you got upgrades; you 'picked up' stuff with some sort of tractor-beam and dragged them back to your base/mothership/whatever. You could then install them into your ship for a sum of $$$.
Or something like that.
The original pod-like craft that you started piloting was egg-shaped, and blue/black.

indeed from the first couple of sentences I'd say it was Elite, although, gravity was present, and, it's 3D :p http://slip.4.pl/ - unblocking myspace facebook firewall

Nah, that looks more like an old PC civilization-in-space game I used to play... what the hell was that game's name... A-something. Ah well.
I can't really recall what the map looked like. I can just remember the action-screen, which was very much like metroid/castlevania, only with no gravity and virtually no friction. And you were in control of a blue little egg-like spaceship.
edit: Name of that civilization-in-space game came to me - Ascendancy!
