Would be nice if ezquake could actually make a http get on map name in conjunction with download_map_url from server...

Bother server admins to update their MVDSVs and you can get ~340kB/s download speeds from those servers.

There is already simple download command in ezquake (requires that you are connected) so I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to implement it the that it could work like "download url". It's practicality is totally the different thing...
