Message in the terminal says: /dev/dsp: Broken pipe and the ingame error message says: S_Startup: SNDDMA_INIT Failed.
There are no other problems with the sound it's just qw, also I use Ubuntu 5.10 with the 2.6.12 kernel.
Thanks.

Which client? Ezquake supports ALSA since the latest version. You should give that a try. The other clients use the deprecated OSS api.

As root do:
echo fuhquake-gl.glx 0 0 direct < /proc/asound/card0/oss
Replace fuhquake-gl.glx with your client executable if different..
