So i have a linux ubuntu box and I just downloaded quake and a whole bunch of texture remappings. Anyways, i downloaded a darkplaces version because it seemed the most compatible with all of the texture remappings that I wanted.
I got bored and decided that I wanted to play multiplayer, but it wouldn't let me connect to any of the servers for some reason... So i stumbled upon your site.
In short, is there any way I could play with you guys using Darkplaces? I finally got the game looking how I like it and I am very hesitant to switch over.
Normally i wouldn't ask such a noobish question, but I didn't see a FAQ or n00bsguide. Sorry!

quakeservers.net for servers maybe darkplaces isn't qw compatible, try http://nquake.com

Recent versions of darkplaces are meant to be able to act as quakeworld clients. If you know the ip:port you should be able to just connect. Darkplaces defaults to a different port, so you'll always need to specify which port to use. Quakeworld defaults to 27500, so you'll need to specify that for any server you try (for reference, darkplaces defaults to port 26000, but that exact number is irrelevent).
I don't think darkplaces' server browser thing will list quakeworld servers, but like I said, 'connect blah:27500' should work just fine in most cases.
FTE (
http://fteqw.com) aims to be mostly compatible with darkplaces' texture naming stuff. So try that if darkplaces really doesn't work for you, but I don't see why it would not.

I would recommend nquake with ezQuake client which imo is the best client at the moment and will be so for a long time.

alright thanks guys. I found a good site, quakeone.com i think that had server listings for different games and mods, so i think i'll try getting that to work for now.

Quakeone.com is a primarily netquake website that lists netquake servers, not quakeworld.
I recommend getting nquake from
http://nquake.com, and using either
quakeservers.net for servers, or using IRC (#qwrookie on quakenet would be a logical choice) to get into games and learn how to play QW better directly from better players.
