Recently having quit wow and starting to play a bit of quakeworld/quake2 again, I was more than annoyed of the state of ASE. Its not being updated anymore for newer games (quake4), outdated filters.txt etc. Don't know if any of you still use ASE, but anyway, I've been modifying filters.txt a bit for quakeworld, quake2, quake3, doom3 and quake4. This is the result: edit: pictures on the forum getting resized by my browser, you can click 'em here as well: http://www.xs4all.nl/~rzavelli/stuff/quake/ase_modified_1_overview.jpghttp://www.xs4all.nl/~rzavelli/stuff/quake/ase_modified_2_d3_qw.jpghttp://www.xs4all.nl/~rzavelli/stuff/quake/ase_modified_3_q2.jpghttp://www.xs4all.nl/~rzavelli/stuff/quake/ase_modified_4_q3.jpghttp://www.xs4all.nl/~rzavelli/stuff/quake/ase_modified_5_q4.jpghttp://www.xs4all.nl/~rzavelli/stuff/quake/ase_modified_6_misc.jpgDownload: http://www.xs4all.nl/~rzavelli/stuff/quake/the_all-seeing_eye_-_quake_optimized.zipInstall how-to: 1. Unzip to "C:\Program Files" (or "C:\Program Files (x86)" on 64-bit windows). 2. Double click "disable_auto_update.reg" (this disables auto-update, which would otherwise overwrite filters.txt). 3. Start ASE up using "ASECountryHack.exe" (or a shortcut linked to this file). 4. Edit the paths to your game executables (and optional command line options). (Tools - Options - Games) edit 2008-05-18:
Note: As of May 2008 the ASE pingers and scanners have been taken off line, meaning ASE will no longer find new servers. This also means refreshing info from servers in your ASE list will be quite slow. However if you still want to keep on using ASE over any other server browser, read on.
It is possible to manually import server lists with ip:port format listings in text format. Sorting/formatting within the text file before importing isn't needed, as long as the ip's and ports are given in the ip:port format.
- Its possible to import server lists (exported) from GameSpy (Quake2). - Its also possible to import server lists from MAXBrowse .xml files, if they are renamed to .txt (Quake3, Quake4, Doom3). - http://www.quakeservers.net/lists/servers/global.txt can be imported (QuakeWorld).
Of course you can still manually add single servers in ASE as well.
I've included servers into this archive as of May 2008, found on various master servers, using the above method. I'm personally going to keep on using ASE in spite of it being crippled, until a worthy replacement comes along.Have fun fragging, cure.

Yahoo officially announced they were no longer supporting ASE so good luck. Soon the scanners will disappear and you will have to manually add servers. Just shoot it and put it out of it's misery.
BTW, the official forum where they announced this is now offline.

I use http://quakeworld.tv as a server-browser.
Btw, tried Qview and I couldn't add quakeservers.net(asgaard.morphos-team.net:27000) to list of master servers, it just doesn't work and pinging other master servers does seem to fail also. TEAM QUAD [need nothing] shaga loses another friend shaga discovers blast radius QUAD

i used to use http://www.linuxgames.com/xqf/index.shtml in linux it is probably not a problem to use in windows; it certainly got the job done
now i use ezquake internal server browser and quakerserver.net (gj mli!)
edit: heres one for windows, donno how good it is: http://www.agsm.net/screenshots.php

updated 2008-03-25:
- made quakeworld qizmo proxy, quake2 and quake3 GTV filters immune to tickbox modifiers.
for instance, having the multiview demo server filter enabled won't filter out qizmo's now.

You can use master.quakeservers.net:27000 (195.35.82.246:27000), this is a different "fake" master server that gives you all the quakeservers.net servers, just remember to use the ip for the ingame server browser, as it doesnt seem to support hostnames :/ (someone please hax) And instead of just using the qtv site, you can also use the "Active Servers" box on the main site it has all the active servers listed.

updated 2008-06-23:
- updated geolite country ip database - updated filters for q3 cpma 1.46 - updated filters for q4max 0.82 - updated server lists using the most common qw, q2, q3, d3 and q4 master servers
note: ASE won't find new servers automatically due to the ASE pingers and scanners going offline some time ago, you'll have to manually add new servers yourself. pinging and scanning however still works, albeit slower than before.
i'll continue to periodically update this archive with servers until a worthy replacement comes along.

FWIW, Qtracker sucks IMO. The guy has the right motives, its just too bloated for my tastes.

true, qtracker's filter system is pretty crap compared to ase's as well.

Well check out this open source project bdamage.se, it supports Warsow, Q3, Q4 & QuakeWars plus other games currently. However I might be able to help you guys to add some support for Quakeworld, Q2 and Doom protocol. Let me know if there are any intrest and it is not a bloatware trust me... the goal is to keep the software light and with a small memory footprint.

looks nice and neat in the screenies, what about OSX and Linux support, does it run in wine? Also what license is it under?
Member 7 posts
Registered: Jul 2008
Well it is only available under Win32, however the code is available and for OSX/Linux developers (I don't have the time myself) are welcome to port it to other platforms. The code itself is in C language (some C++) and using STL, the "only" properitary is the Win32 API calls which is the most of the GUI code based on, and yes it should "work" under Wine (thou I haven't tested the latest version) but you can't launch any game from Wine if I can recall right. License: GNU General Public License (GPL) same as my fav apps FileZilla, Notepad++ etc...

seems interesting, but i didnt see location-related filters on the screenshot. would be great if it could download quakeservers global_servers.txt list automatically. never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

It has country filter. And global_Servers.txt would be possible to implement as etqw utilize a similar method as of today.

hey. thanks a ton cure. i've been using ASE all along without realizing i'm missing a bunch of servers :S It Takes A Tough Man To Make A Tender Rocketjump

Below is now FIXED!
Im almost done by adding Quake World and Quake 2 into Game Scanner however I'm looking for the details to query servers from the master server of Quake 2 which seems not to reply when I'm sending a query command to it.
I'm using in this case master server at master.q2servers.com:27900 as it seems to contain most server (regarding http://www.quakeservers.net/quake2/master_servers/ site) as Quake 2 doesn't have a http serverlist as Quake world has, which would be easy to implement if it did exsist.
Any info/details of the master server protocol for Quake 2 are welcome.
