While making a QW install pack for newbies, I found a problem I can't seem to figure out. Detailed skins appear very blurred even from relatively close distance, while basic skin looks sharp in the very same time. It's not the case of gl_anisotropy as it is already set to max.

could it be something like: gl_smoothmodels 1 = Smooth the textures on models. 0 = Do not smooth the textures on models. or gl_playermip Determines the level of detail of player models. This variable is useful if you are experience game slowdown during multiplayer games when there are lots of players on your screen by shrinking the texture detail, but this will make the player models more blurry
0 = Full detail. 1 = Medium detail. 2 = Low detail. It Takes A Tough Man To Make A Tender Rocketjump

gl_detail shouldn't affect it (at least I don't think it should)
The only things I can suggest to check are gl_texturemode, gl_scalemodeltextures. If the latter is set to 1, what are gl_picmip, gl_miptexlevel, and gl_max_size set to?

gl_anisotropy 99? try 8 or 16.
i would also check double check and triple check your video card's display settings, because they could quite possibly be overriding your quake cfg by setting the image quality to a lower setting or by forcing no anisotropy. It Takes A Tough Man To Make A Tender Rocketjump

I think gl_anisotropy 99 acts the same as 16. Besides te screen was taken before I event set it to anything higher than 1 and it didn't change anything on mdls. Video card's settings are set to max quality, while all the customizable settings (ie. anisotropic filtering, antialiasing...) are set to be controlled by the game itself.

I don't think it will help much, but you can always try to save pngs as tgas or jpegs and try if this have any effect.

Quake doesn't generate additional mipmapping levels for players. Only the single 'high' resolution one (making them appear more grainy further away). I assume pngs use the generic texture loader, and thus are mipmapped properly. This means that when they're further away, they're using a lower resolution version of the texture (showing only the detail that can be reasonably rendered, but a little blured). gl_texturemode gl_linear Then they'll be the same... but not in a good way

Spike: Looks like you nailed. That's the first setting that had any effect, but as you said - it looks crap. Oh, well. Seems there is no way around it.
