Hay.

I'm experiencing some weird FPS drops.
I'll try to explain as good as I can:
With cl_maxfps 0 I get anywhere between 1000 and 2000 FPS. If I try to set a maxfps of say 500 the FPS goes down to 250-350, no matter where I am on any map.
This wouldn't be that much of a problem if I was playing on my old CRT, but I recently got a new 19" TFT and I would like to have stable FPS as I believe quake would be a lot smoother.

Anyone have a clue on what could be the cause of them drops ?!

My system is:
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT (512MB)
and I'm playing on a 19" TFT @ 1280x1024 (75hz)

I can't help but would also like an answer. I normally get between 1000 and 2000 fps depending on map with 2 * 9800GX2, Q9450 @ 3GHz and 8GB ram @ 1066. I tried setting cl_maxfps to 480 - my thinking was 60 (Hz on LCD) * 8 (nice binary number) but I also get FPS drops - not as bad, just down to 400 or 430 sometimes. Is there another setting that could help?

Maybe http://www.quakeworld.nu/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=37440 gives some help.

This is a known problem on either AMD x2 processors or NV drivers on SMP systems.

The problem SHOULD be resoveld by installing http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/AMD_Dual-Core_Optimizer_113.zip and if that doesn't help turn off the threaded optimization from NVIDIA control panel (or you could first try this).

I hope you aren't using Vista (in this case who knows what helps).
