Hi guys, I made a new icon for the nQuake installer, I thought the default icon looked too generic, maybe empezar will use it if he likes it. The current icon looks like this:

The current icon is the original QuakeWorld icon that was released under the GPL license.

The current icon is the original QuakeWorld icon that was released under the GPL license. You guys probably might feel that it's worth to honour the qw traditions, but for someone who downloads the game for the first time the first impression he gets is that it's a really old game.

nQuake aims to be bulletproof against license stuff. Are you sure that your icon (which contains copyrighted logo) can be used in GPL project?
It's also imporant how the icon looks in 16x16.

Exactly. GPL and 16x16 looks are my primary concerns. Thanks for explaining, although a more modern looking icon would help.

Why should copyrighted logos be a problem with GPL projects?

Why should copyrighted logos be a problem with GPL projects? Because everything has to be GPL or something. bps: That looks like a squished fly on 16x16 :p

I know, I had a optimistic idea, but the result sucks (I know)... just thought I could post it here before i pushed shift+delete on nq2.png @ my desktop Join us on discord.quake.world

Because everything has to be GPL or something. No? You can't GPL a name anyways...

All the code and images used in nQuake has to be GPL. So the icon has to be GPL in order to comply. If I chose to make nQuake closed-source, I could use the Quake logo. It wouldn't be legal, but I think I would be able to get away with it easier than if I broke the GPL.

Yes, but using the quake symbol should not be a problem, you just take the small QW icon thats included with the GPL source and remake that, because that comply with GPL....

Zalon, that is very bold interpretation of what GPL allows you to do. I'd ask you again if you studied laws or you have a lawyer that tells you this stuff, but you never answered me before, so why would you now We've also forgot to mention that Quake and Quake logo are copyrighted. Guess why the only absolutely-free Quake package is named Open QUARTZ and not Open Quake?

Well, the GPL say that everything released under the GPL can be modified aslong as it keeps the license, so i say the icon can be modified. Another thing, if we can't use the quake logo, howcome ezQuake can use the name?

The source code can be modified. E.g. you cannot take the .exe, modify some bits here and there and distribute only new exe. How does that apply to .ico I don't know. howcome ezQuake can use the name? Guess what. I cannot. But noone cares.

I'm allowed to modify GPL souce code, and only distribute the build, i can even charge money for it. If you buy a build from me however, and ask for the source, i'm obligated to provide you with the source code, but i can even charge you for that, as long as it doesn't exceed the cost of the build. But you are not entitled to getting the source, just because it's GPL.

Yes, but read again what Johnny_cz wrote. The question is if the icon is a "binary" or a "proper GPLble file".

The Q logo is actually quite similar to the Q4 logo. So yeah, they might care.

do u really think ID cares about a small community using a 12 year old logo for non-commercial stuff? They are using this logo (in different form ofc) for QuakeLive right now. So there is possibility they don't want it to be used even in non-commercial stuff.
