HI! I Have a little question.

My PC is quite old:

Mainboard microstar KT4AV (AGP)
CPU: ATHLON 2200 +
Geforce MX 400

I' d like to change my graphic card to get more FPS, but don' t want to change other components if it' s not really necessary (I only play qw and use internet)

Doese anyone knows which is the best graphic card that can be used on this pc?

Here where I live there aren't many AGP cards left in shops (and those still available are rather expensive), so here it's better to buy some in online auction or so. Maybe that applies to you too, maybe not.

my system is AGP also, i bought a Gforce 7600GS half a year ago for 45€ (used ofc). Like jonnhy_cz says, best to search for used ones in online forums / auctions.

just bought Sapphire Technology RADEON HD 3650 512MB AGP... now have a lot of fps (double than before)..but i can' t use them

when i play qw my keyboard is lagged !!! seems to play with 1000 of ping!
any idea?

It's a bit of a weird one - if the KB is a logi MX5000 then bin it - if not, check your gfx drivers (did you use the most up to date sapphire drivers?)

It seems odd that you changed gfx and get KB lag - have you tried swapping back to your old gfx to make sure that it is the gfx that is causing the problem, and not something else?

just another question: the graphic card requires a power supply of 550 W, mine is something like 220 (don' remember exactly), but the pc works anyway... coulde be related to keyboard lag??

Can't really say how could the GPU make your keyboard to lag, sounds really weird.

Second, the GPU you bought certainly do NOT require up to 550W of power. If it runs with the 220W you have now, so be it. That 550W is just the over-safe-margin that the company applies. I have a GPU that requires prolly twice the juice HD3650 does, and I have 460W PSU. I mean with 550W PSU you could run a high-end gaming PC with no problem.

there is something really strange, tryed this procedure:
1)uninstall the gfx drivers and restart pc
2)launch qw-> doesn' t work (could'n start opengl ofc!)
3)reinstall gfx drivers, (they don' t require restart pc)
4)launch qw -> works, with no strange keyboard lag
5)restart pc -> strange lags come back and pc crashes if i try to use internet

maybe need more ram ?(1gb now)

Sounds more like malware/virus than anything else. Did you try your old gfx card?

Probably now the CPU became the bottleneck of your system, so just set sys_yieldcpu 1, probably that solves all the problems for you.

so..just 1 update
the keyboard does not lag anymore..i tried to switch qw priority from high to normal and now it s all ok!
but...pc crashes every time i connect to internet..!??!
now i m using the old gfx card..and searching on the net..any idea wil be appreciated.

Nothing I can think of. I would suggest AV check, spybot, etc.

When you say connect to the net, do you use a modem?

i use adsl router... anyway i think i ll bring my pc to a pc shop and ask help..then i ll buy a new one

I wouldn't recommend or bother wasting time trying to install drivers packaged by some 3rd party guy who thinks he knows shit and stuff. The difference between official driver and driver from ngohq is superficial, they both use the same binaries (ngohq can NOT code drivers) but instead some of the default settings have been changed from driver INFs (this is "bad" because if NVIDIA or ATI wanted to have those settings enabled/disabled by default, they'd done so or even given the possibility to change those particular settings) and no bugs or whatever has been fixed, how could they be in the first place since, again, no changes to driver binaries have been made.

My recommendation: Stay away from 3rd party packaged drivers, instead use gfxcard makers official drivers.

It could be, but that would be really weird on any pc from the last decade - also gfx is on a different bus afaik (I don't know much tho ;-))


Seconded although I would note that sometimes older drivers (still from manufacturer's site) can solve some problems.

220 WATT doesn't seem to smart to me for these kind of cards.... I'd go to a pc nerd forum and ask there. But I think they'll say the same. And a whole new case/housing usually doesn't cost much more then a PSU alone... which you might want to keep in mind.
