One thing I've wondered about for years is the concept of 'surfing' in QW, but I've never really found any documentation or analysis on the subject. It seems to me that if you are travelling at high (horizontal) velocity when you hit water, if you hold down jump (possibly translated to swimup by cl_smartjump), then you 'surf' along the surface of the water at a higher speed than you would normally move. It's impossible/difficult to change direction while doing this without losing speed and I think that speed is gradually reduced over time (water friction when you bob?). It's difficult to judge though because I've never really tested it on a large 'ocean', mainly just dm3 because it's easy to build up speed on the bridges. Anyway I'd welcome any views on this phenomena

Yeah it's probably something more useful in TF as most commonly played DM maps don't have many places where it would be useful. Maaaaaaybe bigroom lava on dm2 but to be honest if you've got time to build up that much speed towards the ledge before dropping into the lava, then you probably could have escaped onto the steps in any case Perhaps if a rocket splash pushed you in I suppose.

I usually do it while warming up on dm3, good fun! :-)

dEus: Hold jump key, and u will be in the water surfice until u release your jump key O.o no need tutorial, just the faster u reach water, the faster you surf. HangTime: All players do it when they fall lava in dm4, trying to rl kill the enemy before they die but they just stay up withouth moving... "the quieter you become, the more you are able to hear"

I like surfing in TF2. Its heaps of fun. Can it be done in qw?

Does it work better with cl_smartjump off?

time!, i know i can keep my speed by holding down jump but i think there was a way to start speedswimming when you were in the water already. you had to look down while swimming upwards or smth like that. people would clear the water passage in well6 much faster with this trick.

ah ok. i never knew this. maybe someone can give a short demo / avi of the surfing in question?

Here's a quick demo of some dm3 surfing. As you can see, it's not very practical unless you're on a map with a large expanse of water to cross, and you do gradually lose speed every time you hit the water. You're basically a stone skipping along the surface of a lake as long as you hold jump.

I think it was because I recorded it with the server end of the frogbot ca mod by accident. Plain old .qwd seems to work fine.

Yeah, if find that to be a problem, if i load a map... ever since mvd was added as the server in ezQuake i record mvd demos with the record command. Anyone found a way to record qwd's, eg clientside?

That's an interesting idea to add to a race map
