ok, im gonna post this on the off-chance someone can help me.

ive basically tried EVERYTHING tho..

in-game im taking massive fps hits (in fights somewhere in the region of 60 fps sometimes!), and just running around usually around 10-15.

I've tried all the Smooth Quake settings, messed around with sys_yieldcpu + highpriority, tried latest card drivers, tried the 178.24 drivers, i've disabled all running progs, ive dropped my resolution down to 640 x 480 and reduced FPS to 240 and STILL can't get stable.

Nothing is really eating resources that I can see.. and my cfg is def not the problem.

I've also tried getting rid of the 24 bit textures and using standard, as well as r_drawflat.

v_sync is forced OFF

I have recently formatted also and have a performance edn install of Windows XP with all latest updates etc.

If I've missed anything chances are I've tried it..

I'm using ezQuake 1.9 stable (build 2253).

P4 3.00ghz, ASUS P5VD2-VM, 1gb (2 x different brand RAM - I know..), GeForce 8600 GTS 256mb card.

19" Philips 109B4 monitor - have tried 800x600@100hz - 308 max fps and 640x480@120hz - 240 max fps.

I know it's an old system.. it's gotta be hardware related..

Please let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions. -- I know these topics come up all the time, but seriously, this game is from freaking 1996!! and I can't even pull max FPS..!

Could your video card be on the way out?
Test it with other games if you have any.

Maybe set the nvidia drivers to performance to see if that has any affect.

I had similar problems in another game ... and the problem was that one of my RAM was broken
try and use only one of them to see if that works
if not try the other one (or you can simply change their place)

old system, lol? what adde says might be correct, if I can get good fps with my 650 mhz (that's an old system) you should be able to get the same with your "monster machine"

Unless he has an ATI gfx card

Now on topic, joey_crack - are you using any custom models?

RAM is a worthwhile avenue to explore. I'll run a Memtest86+ tonight and see it comes up with anything before going out and buying new.

Zalon: all my models are standard. I had the same problem while using custom models and also the standard models.

24 bit maps, skins, models etc doesn't make any difference :/

OK. Bought and installed new RAM - same difference.

Quake is all jerky and unplayable, and FPS drops by sometimes in excess of 100..

ANYone have any ideas..?

Old games don't like new computers. You should give your beast pc to me and I'll give one of my old system to you. Problem solved.

Seriously: I somtimes have the same fps-drop problems, but most of the time it's fine. Do you play with higher hz mouse then standard 125hz? What happens if you change that? It's probably not the cause of the problem with such a fast pc, but if you've overdriven your usb ports and you got a lot of other usb stuff connected to it, perhaps that's a problem. You do have quake installed on an internal drive, right? Not on a usb drive?

If you have a multi-core CPU and get small freezes, lags, or similar un-smooth experience
try setting "threaded optimization: off" in video card drivers.

Just to be sure, you did try r_dynamic 0 - right?

Be sure that gl_lighting_vertex is set to "0" gives me 200 more fps..

megalodon: i should be able to get constant fps at least up to 308 without ANY drops. - mouse is @ 500hz but doesn't make any diff standard. - yes quake is on internal drive. - i dont have a multi-core cpu..

raz0: yep, r_dynamic is set at 0, as is gl_lighting_vertex..

Anyone with good knowledge of the hardware side of things know if this could be motherboard or CPU related?

I guess the problem is that with a pc and the way it's used and setup, it can have so many causes.

If you're ready to read, check this:

http://www.tweakguides.com/System.html

And especially download the guide:
http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html

But... it's A LOT of info, I haven't read all of it myself yet
