well i'd need some tips cause ive started to train seriously to become a better player. ive watched some demos and all but i strated playing quakeworld 2 days ago. i also have some experience in quake 3 quake live and i often play doom 2(yes the good, old doom 2 ) Any tips on what I can start practicing. ive been playing ffa but i find it somewhat annoying cause whenever i spawn theres always someone waiting for me with a rocket launcher so id also need some tips for ffa. i downloaded a cfg from quakeworld.nu and changed it to my likings with aliases and all.

Welcome to the elite-gaming zone
First of all, you will need to learn bunny, trickjumps, etc... -> Bunny tutorial + ztricks, ztricks2, ztrain, ztrain2, ssj(easy for starters) and zjumps.
Then, you will either play FFA, which is nothing more than spwn camping as long as you have a weapon or play duels, ffa, tdm whatever you want with bots.
At this point, you better train some aiming skills, povdmm4, end, maybe endif( but i hate it ) amphi, etc...
You're ready to rock! Now, if you still playing quakeworld ( I'm sure, you'll love it ) just play with all kinda opponents, but don't stuck playing with good players only, it will be very frustrating and make the game look annoying ( i talk from my own experience, i'm just a rookie trying to improve aswell )

The most important point: HAVE LOT'S OF PHUN!!! Gaming is all about fun GL&HF, cya on the servers!

[edit] BTW, once you reach the map-knowleadge, moving-skills and good aiming, you can start learning quakeworld, which is all about tactics, strategy, timing and teamplay.
[edit 2] doom2 = skulltag, zdaemon or what?

I have to disagree on some parts of the text above.

Basically what you want to do is to play some real games, not FFA or against bots (doesn't really serve any purpose). So try to find some people who are rookies and play with them, the game mode doesn't really matter at this point, but 2on2 can be more fun than getting raped on 1on1.

If you can't find games, maybe then you should try improving your movement. This doesn't mean trying to finish ztricks or ztricks2 since they are pure speed trick maps, something you can try somewhat later to maximize your speed. Basically just learn how to bunny and accelerate, using whatever way you find the easiest, even jumping around empty servers on different maps. Maybe those trick maps, or maybe not, it all depends on your current level.

As for the aim, it's somewhat important in QW and you should really consider training that too, but not too much or so that it takes time from real games (dmm3 basically). Shooting bots could be ok in the very beginning, but when you play human opponents you realize how much waste of time botmatch actually was, since human players are 10 times faster than bots and unpredictable, much harder to hit in the end.

The tactics and such will come in time with playing, and the style that suits you the best. Tactics can be learned by watching other players. After this comes the hardest part: if you really want to learn, you will watch your own demos, both where you lose and where you win. You can watch your own pov, but you see your failures better from the opponent's pov, however bad that might feel sometimes

Learning QW takes a lot of time, you can't expect to be able to compete with the best in just one year. Maybe not even mid-class players, but after two years it will become a lot easier.
