some thoughts:
replace LVDS by whatever monitor you have. you may know this by writing
xrandr (look for "default" or "VGA"
also, u may also have to edit your xorg.conf file

If you want to run ezquake in software with 320x200@77hz you must first delete the svgalib package shipped with ubuntu. (1.4.3)
Svgalib 1.4.3 that ships with ubuntu contains bugs the will make huge fps drops if enemy takes quad.
Another problem is that most new hardware is not supported through svgalib and there might be problem. An old Geforce 3 MX card for the PCI slot would be the best way if you want good fps and be able to change hz.
The procedure is long - you must patch the source of svgalib then add the modelines manually in your /etc/vga/libvga.config file
Software Quake does not have anything todo with X at all and i doubt that your xorg version will accept a modeline of 320x200@77hz (or @144hz) and the x11 version of mqwcl/fuhquake/ezquake seems rarely unused at all. I've never heard of anyone trying to play quake in software mode in X
