Hi! I played quake a long time ago and decided to try it again now after many years. When I played actively I played with software quake and crt monitor, since then I now don't have either and found out I can't get 320x200 resolution with software clients anymore. So, I tried glEzquake and have a few questions:
1.) Feels like i'm having packet loss, and I don't. I miss sounds like taking a backback once a while and other things like that and have some odd lag spikes every now and then, what's this? 2.) Ping is higher, 16-20 vs 11ms 3.) Is there any way to "emulate" the software look with d_mipcap 3 etc. I find glquake with all it's fancy graphics too detailed and sometimes it's hard to spot out things like grenades and others from the background. 4.) I suck and can't hit anything. Having a break is not a good thing.
My computer is Intel Q6600, 4GB, GF 8800GTS, Windows 7

1.) Feels like i'm having packet loss, and I don't. I miss sounds like taking a backback once a while and other things like that and have some odd lag spikes every now and then, what's this? Probably MMCSS issue with Windows 7 on certain hardware. You can try turning off the MMCSS service (requires registry editing) or you can try turning off network throttling (requires registry editing). Easy way of testing this is just stop MMCSS service and see if the problem goes away. Note: this will disable your sound too, but if it helps then you can take the registry editing path that does not turn off windows audio. 2.) Ping is higher, 16-20 vs 11ms If your ping to a server is 12ms or less, then you probably have cl_maxfps that is not multiplication of cl_physfps (should be like physfps 77, maxfps 154/231/308 and so on) My computer is Intel Q6600, 4GB, GF 8800GTS, Windows 7- Kzu It is possible that you have to turn off threaded optimization from NVCPL if you are having unstable fps.

But, if you're having cl_maxfps that is multiple of cl_physfps, then it's not a multiple from screen refreshrate, which is 60hz on my lcd. So I can't get smooth quake with good ping right? If i'm correct, fps should be screen hz, or 2x or smth, like 60fps or 120fps.

3.) Open your quake/ezquake/configs/config.cfg and look for this: //Texture Settings gl_max_size "8" gl_picmip "1" gl_subdivide_size "128" gl_texturemode "GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR" This would give you some lego emulation for GL. I use this myself.

I've also stumbled upon one problem lately. EZQuake starts REALLY slowly now: it takes more than 1 minute until it loads *both GL and software). Everything used to run very smoothly untill the last days. I've tried reinstalling it, no effect. But when I loaded one of the really old ezquake versions, it was all ok. The problem is with .exe files, I've checked it. Dunno really how to handle it, 90 seconds loading time may be really frustrating. Any ideas?

Those new Nvidia drivers (01.06.2011) may cause it because I noticed that after I had installed them. Another re-installation of the previous ones didn't help though.

I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary with OpenGL games and the latest NVIDIA drivers (275.33 WHQL) with W7/SP1 and GTX 570. What's your system anyway?

Maybe, but I have ATI (ASUS EAX1950Pro) :/ And interesting thing that there was no problems with this new version until last time and I have no idea why they suddenly appeared.

Win XP, Sp3, gts 250. Interesting thing is that it used to launch very quickly which is normal. Now it takes ages.

It's because http://www.quakeservers.net/lists/servers/global.txt contains some invalid host names, so the DNS lookup takes a while before fails. I don't know why those host names are in there - why IP addresses aren't there instead? Also, I thought quakeservers.net automatically filters out dead servers? Maybe it needs some time (24 hours or so?)
Solution is to remove from your Server Browser all the master servers that return such invalid servers and also to erase everything from the server browser cache (C:\program files\quake\ezquake\sb\cache)

Glad I found this thread, it's been driving me mad the past week or so!
Like Kloze I had installed a new nvidia driver and this thread was a bit of a red herring: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=201944 Having uninstalled the driver and still having the problem with both gl and sw client I started messing around with the sb sources as I'd noticed sometimes it was taking ages to update them - but again another red herring came along, as my isp was having DNS problems last weekend (i.e. since some websites wouldn't load I figured it was caused by that!!
