I recently installed ezquake on my netbook (with win 7 starter) and have some fps issues. I set maxfps to 120 (well im not an expert at this, but i guess if the display is 60Hz, then a multiple of that should be a right choice?). My main problem is that the fps drops down, for example on bigger maps, like dm3 quad area, or when some action occurs, making it a bit unstable, with the fps going up and down between 120 and ~90. If i stand still, and do nothing, my fps is 120.
I tried the exact same cfg on another older netbook, with win xp and i get a fucking stable 120 fps everywhere. The specs are almost the same, the graphics card is intel gma 900 and gma 3150(mine). Any ideas how can I get a stable fps on win7? Is this an OS issue, and i simply have to downgrade to xp? All drivers are up to date.

I often use netbook(with intel video) for playing qw.
Even with r_dynamic 0 gl renderer behaves on such hardware much worse than software renderer.
So I use SW (400x300).

Go to services and disable MMCSS (multimedia class scheduler service) and then stop the service. This will effectively also turn off your sounds, but you should be able to see if the fps becomes better. If it does, enable the MMCSS service again (setting "automatic" and report back and there will be a solution.

I just tried it, but it's as if nothing has happened, the same unstable fps.

It sounds like it might be an issue with some sort of power saving mode on your netbook's video card... A lot of them do tricks to conserve power, since they assume you'll be on a battery

The problem is that they don't always take into account that you're probably running on AC with a power supply :p

I'm not very familiar with Windows... are you able to find out if you can disable power management/profiles/states for your card, or maybe for whatever bus it's running on?

my own laptop overheats somewhat when stressed. While capable of 300-400 fps, I tend to throttle the graphics card such that when otherwise maxed it gets only 150-200 fps. Because that's still better than windows throttling the cpu and getting 50 fps.

If its an intel jobbie, I'd be interested in knowing if http://triptohell.info/moodles/win32/fted3dqw.exe gets you higher/more consistant fps.

Well there are energy saving options in the GMA driver settings, which didn't help
I also tried this exe, Spike, but it was the same thing. The fps goes up and down in the very same pattern as in ezquake. Thanks for helping anyways

I don't think that matters for tft, only crt, but I could be wrong. I'd simply use 77 fps. I even use that on my desktop
