Playing in the browser like Quake Live when nquake thingy is juste a java installer.

Well, its JavaScript, rendering done via WebGL, so it basically should run on anything what supports JS + WebGL.

So effectively one would not need to download any third party software/drivers/whatever (java etc) to be able to play?

Correct, you just need a browser with decent WebGL support. As you can see on the page, it runs on Android too.

So QuakeLive is JS, too? Can you get serious playable frame rates with it (as in >= 100 at all times)?

I don't think QL is JS.

You have to be patient at the first load and usually click "wait" for a couple of times.
