Hello, Bitcoin is a open source P2P digital currency, getting a lot of attention recently. I think it'd be a very interesting to have bitcoin support inside in QuakeWorld, for example: - Players A and B enter the server.
- They both agree to duel for bitcoin, and they both want to bet 0.01 BTC. Winner takes everything.
- One of the players enables "bitcoin duel mode" by typing /bitcoin_duel 0.01
- Server generates new bitcoin address and awaits 0.02 balance
- Each player sends 0.01 BTC by typing /bitcoin_send 0.01
- Server receives both transactions and the duel begins.
- Winner recieves 0.02 BTC
It would be a nice way to promote QW as it'd be the first game to officially support Bitcoin network

This would probably not be a good idea until there is some kind of user authorization system in place in QuakeWorld? Otherwise you would only end up dueling with your friends, and then you really don't need to be able to do it in-game... I think there are quite a bunch of features i'd like a server side coder to implement before this one if i could decide. Interesting thought though. www.facebook.com/QuakeWorld

Otherwise you would only end up dueling with your friends, and then you really don't need to be able to do it in-game... I don't think there is any need for user authorization. The whole implementation is probably much easier than it appears. BTC address is relatively simple to generate, unique and can be created on-the-fly for each duel. Server then only needs to use some external API ( blockchain perhaps?) to watch if the address was funded. It can even print the address QR code to console, so each player can fund the account by using mobile phone. There are endless possibilities here. We don't even need anything client or server side - it's also possible to just monitor the servers (just like stats.quakeworld.nu does) and process everything externally on a website. Last but not least, there is a betting system already - Goldrush (Edited 2013-05-20, 18:59)

I meant user authorization so you don't end up thinking you're playing a div5 guy when it really is a div0 guy behind the nick. The incentive to cheat would also be higher all of a sudden. www.facebook.com/QuakeWorld

Ah you mean a good player pretending being a newbie player Yeah, but I think it should be all about making fun, not a serious business. With bitcoin you can even transfer extremely small values - winning some "satoshis" could just be a really nice feature. Another option would be to setup 1 global account funded by the whole community, and pay for each frag

[–]krhedwards 1 point 4 months ago leetCoin.com seems to be doing it with Counter-Strike. Looks like more games to follow. Looks like it was too late 4 months ago too.

That’s a smart idea! This integration would be a win-win situation for both user and the owner. A lot of websites, particularly online casino are enjoying the great benefits of using bitcoin, probably it’s time for QuakeWorld to give it a try.

IMO there's way too many legal issues here. The server acting as mediator, recieving and sending money, may require a license or having registered a currency exchange...
Can't imagine many people wanting to host these servers really. Money laundry?
