What level of ping whiner are you? Select the lowest ping bracket you will play with and not whine. (Assuming you have Antilag and a similarly pinged opponent.)
  • A 12-19ms
  • B 20-38ms
  • C 39-75ms
  • D 76-105ms
  • E 106-140ms
  • F 141-165ms
  • G 166ms

Quite a margin in C option. I would say 50ms is still somewhat playable "out-of-the-box" when you are used to 13-26ms.
39ms vs 75ms are day/night for me personally. Go beyond 50ms and I think one needs days of practice to play even 70% of his normal lpb level.

I can play up to 65ms (Amsterdam to Russian servers) without needing too much adjustment.... I play a bit in New York which is 100ms (give or take 5ms) and that takes a bit more adjustment but I find the key to doing it is to practice the dm2 stair jump until i get used to the difference and then within 5minutes i am used to it. I actually find going back down to low ping after high ping harder...

I have had fiberoptical since 2002 so it's kinda hard to play with anything higher than 25ms as it's very uncommon.
nowadays however i play some on uk servers where i get 38ms. It feels bad but it's ok

B for me. Anything above 38ms feels so bad for me doesn't work with my playstyle whatsoever

G.

As long as it's stable. No PL, no giant spikes to 240+! I'd be the happiest player in QW no matter what my ping is just as long as it was stable. :p

Totally what Phil said; it depends what the stakes are.

C when competitive.
G when not competitive.

Also, I find it disturbing that some of my most played ping levels are not even on this list, meanwhile I cannot even get ping in categories A-B. G should read "166ms+". Americans, Brazilians, and Canadians often play in the 200-230 range.

Are we talking in competition here, or just practice duels? Also, that C band is a bit wide.

If I'm signed up to a tournament, I'll play any ping that's required of me (assuming it's stable) as long as it's equal to the other guy's. I probably wouldn't sign up to a tournament where I would reasonably expect to play more than one game over 100ms, though. So D I guess.

For fun games, I have to play 51 a lot because it's hard to get Scandinavians to play west of Denmark, but, in an ideal world, I wouldn't play over B.

It depends on many diffferent things for me. Anything up to 38 is fine in pretty much every case. 52 feels like the limit where it will start having a major affect on the gameplay. I dislike the thought of having to ping up to 52 or higher when playing someone from Europe who can't get a better ping due to his poor connection. However I'd probably accept even higher than 52 or 64ms without whine or frustration when playing a player from a different continent. Or if a tournament has a gimmick that you need to play with 100+ ms then sure, I don't have a quarrel with the ping. Also my biggest concern is unstable ping and PL and not the amount of ping itself.

You've just said it all !!!
If I had to choose between: ping 13-50 (varying randomly) OR ping 100 (STEADY) I would probably prefer (get used) to 100 STEADY!

It's the same issue with MOUSE ACCELERATION (but WORSE, becouse m_accel is not random).

For me, m_accel & varying-ping are BRAIN VIRUSES (your brain never get used to it). You will never be good...

Some of the very best Quake 3/Live players use mouse acceleration.

It has fewer benefits in quakeworld, though. There is less need for alternating between rapid turning and long-distance precision in our game.

D, since playing in the UK/Paris only nets me ~105 ping or so and it's not that hard to adjust, but it's definitely a pain in the ass to then go to a NY server and try playing with 25 ping again.
