I have just emailed every server admin I could find (7 in total and mushi contacted a couple also) that is running outdated KTX/MVDSV (anything below 1.37 and 0.31) and asked them to update their servers and also add a qwfwd. Already I've had two server admins respond saying they would update them.

A big thanks to Rikoll for donating an Amazon EC2 account for 12 months to get these servers up. San Francisco- sfo.usa.besmella.com:27500 - Qizmo
- sfo.usa.besmella.com:28501 - KTX 1
- sfo.usa.besmella.com:28502 - KTX 2
- sfo.usa.besmella.com:30000 - QWfwd
San Francisco has a direct cable connection to Tokyo so this should mean better routing for some North Americans to play against Australians. The North West part of the continent was also one of the only locations where there wasn't a server. We still need another volunteer to setup an Amazon EC2 account to enable us to run a free server for 12 months. QuakePhil will be setting the one up in North Virginia (right next to Washington) so we just have Oregon remaining.

I created a map of QW server locations using IPmapper. It's nowhere near perfect though since for example address of jp.besmella.com is registered to Seattle, Washington.

LUXURY!!! Why our best server not in the map? (qw.quakeworld.com.br - 191.96.5.222) It's marker is probably placed in the same exact spot as the marker of server with address 54.207.88.247. IPmapper might not be the best tool to display locations. It seems to use freegeoip.net to get the locations of addresses. 191.96.5.22254.207.88.247

Ola Mushinho and Dirtbox,
Great initiative, thanks for that. I'm in Singapore now and for the first time in my life have insanely fast fibre broadband, but have nowhere to play as ping is too high in California and Europe / Russia. The Japanese servers are just about acceptable ping, but I don't fancy my chances of getting a game there.
Is there any chance of getting a server located in Perth, or alternatively maybe a proxy in Perth that could help my routing to East Coast .au? I see lots of Australian QuakeLive players including Fraze and Camma playing on Singapore servers with <70ms ping and wondering if I could somehow get that in Australia in QW.
Also any Australian players please give me a shout! Driz where are you?
Also please allow me to make a donation to this project!
Thanks, James

I pinged every IP on this thread and below are the responses. USA usa.besmella.com: 164ms USA sfo.usa.besmella.com: 216ms AU au.besmella.com: 241ms USA miami.usa.besmella.com: 260ms Now looking at Perth: Two things: with 74ms I could play a fair ping game vs Aussies and New Zealanders but I cannot find a VPS in Perth. I found one company called WAGaming that provide game servers and have emailed them, but they don't say anything about VPS. Second thing: from perth with QWFWD I would get playable ping to the other AU servers, so I could hopefully play some games in Sydney also. Exploding with excitement.

Also any Australian players please give me a shout! Driz where are you? We can actually get a free server in Singapore with Amazon EC2 but we found that the pings are shitty. 200+ from both Australia and USA however the singapore server itself pings 80ms to the Tokyo servers so if we put a qwfwd there in singapore you could potentially get 80ms to Japan also in which case you can play against Australians there who get 130ms and also some americans ping 130ms also. To do this, sign up for this https://aws.amazon.com/free/ and then give me the user/password and I will create a free Linux server instance and setup a server and qwfwd (or you can do it yourself). Suitable? Also driz is now living in the UK. You can find him in #mofo (Edited 2014-07-22, 07:44)

Hey jgalvin! nice to hear from you! 4ms to perth should give very decent ping to play in oceania! you can signup for that EC2 in singapore and start your server there... but there's some cheap vps in perth: NETORIGIN (cheap) http://lowendbox.com/blog/netorigin-com-au-17-95-audquarter-512mb-ram-openvz-in-perth-australia/ ping this 118.88.20.101 -> http://www.netorigin.com.au/vps-hosting/vps IINET (not so cheap) http://www.iinet.net.au/business/medium/website-solutions/vps/ Have fun looking! http://vpsau.com/ cu soon never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

I have had some feedback that players are getting PL on these servers. Perhaps we can work out a time when we can test it together? BogoJoker? Who else was it you were playing with there? One thing to note, this location gives less RAM that the other Amazon locations 0.6GB instead of 1GB but this shouldn't make a difference as in the Netherlands I run more servers and a QTV and experience no LAG at all. I am also keen to know if North American players use this guide correctly, do the SFO servers give them better routing to Tokyo.

FYI I got a few VPS servers, including that Perth one. Haven't had a chance to try them out though because I'm traveling at the moment. Will report back in a week or so!

There is no reason not to setup the Singapore server for free with Amazon EC2. Even the qwfwd alone will get you to Singapore with around 90ms and there you can play West-Coast Americans and East-Coast Australians. Servers in Perth could be interesting also. Get some test IPs first before purchasing because some big ISP's like Telstra in Perth route everything via Melbourne before getting to Perth so some people may ping very high here. From Melbourne and Sydney to Perth servers should be no problem though and they will get around 60-70ms

I quick update for everyone... The new servers that we have put up in Australia, The Netherlands and The USA have now hosted over 2000 games of QW! We are still actively looking for ideal locations to host servers. The #1 on our hit-list right now is Iceland with the cable spanning from NYC to Iceland hopefully being completed in just a few months. All going well this should radically change the way matches between North America and Europe are played.

I'm wondering which solution is better: routing packets through qw soft or directly (kernel level). Anyone tried that before? Mushi! & dirtbox - any thoughts?

Thinking on the next worldwide Clan Arena league... Fusion will be back The cool thing about these servers, I am told, is that they are only 30ms from each other and each running qwfwd. They are allowing Argentinean's to play Brazilians with low ping for the first time ever...

Soon get all the australian players to get ready to have a taste of sane ;] when we get that hawaiian server! LETS GO AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OY OY OY. wake up I can't see that happening any time soon unfortunately. The Cabling between AU-NZ-Hawaii-LA has been in place for 14 years already and so far no local routing available. There is a new cable coming in 2016 which may change this.. Fingers crossed for then. In other news, Amazon Web Services just opened up a new location today in Frankfurt, Germany which means we can have new free servers located there for 12 months if someone just sets up a free account.

There's been shit tons of packet loss on the nl server for multiple people lately. I get few second spikes of like 10-30 every few minutes and usually it's not in sync with the opponents pl which is weird.

I recently joined a Quakelive server in South Africa with alot of people and asked them about playing Quakeworld and maybe even joining the Fusion clan arena 3x3. Next time ask them where their community communicates. Some site, subreddit,... ? never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

There is nothing wrong according to the graphs of the server usage but I upgraded the server anyway. The fact that you get it and others don't at the same time mean it is network related and not server... Likely between you and the server.

claw i don't think you clicked the "news" link yes, it will be interesting. ping will probably drop by 50% from/to brazil. ping is now 90-120 to east usa, i see no reason it should be much higher to brazil after this cable is operational never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

I actually played some with the brazilians yesterday. Originally with a ping of 360 which was close to unplayable, but then used the miami proxy which saved me over 100 ping and I got 250ms instead of 360. I loved that proxy <3
