QW Server Admins - We need some Qizmo's!

Currently out of the 7 active Qizmo servers around the world.... I am running 4 of them meaning that only 3 other people in the world run a public Qizmo. Not good enough!

People seem to be under the impression that there is no need for Qizmo anymore (because of qwfwd and client enhancements) but this is definitely not the case. Qizmo still contains some features which have never been replicated which are still beneficial to modern QW players:
  • Nail filter: Run on a server-side Qizmo, this can help with both the network and FPS lag associated with a lot of nailgun activity (think about 4on4 on e1m2).
  • Compression: Yes, people still have low bandwidth connections and compression does help with this.
  • Sending Multiple Packets: This is probably the most important one. With this feature alone you can lower and in some cases eliminate packet loss.

For a long time I have been wanting to write a follow up guide to How to use qwfwd to improve your ping on how to use Qizmo to fix your bad connection... BUT... not enough server admins are running Qizmo Proxies. Currently we only have Qizmo's in the following locations:
  • Sydney
  • Amsterdam
  • Moscow
  • Paris (i think)
  • Miami
  • Los Angeles
  • Warsaw (i think)

We need Qizmo Proxies (most Urgently) in the following locations:
  • Stockholm
  • Copenhagen
  • Helsinki
  • New York
  • London

If you run servers in any of these locations then PLEASE get a Qizmo up and running. Once this is done I will put out a guide for users how to fix your connection with Qizmo!

Still there is not a single nordic server admin running a Qizmo? C'mon!

Some interesting testing that I've been doing. When I connect to troopers.fi and quakeworld.fi with qwfwd I typically get 52ms. This is the same whether it be manually choosing nl.besmella.com:30000 or using sb_findroutes 1. If Instead I disable sb_findroutes 1 and use Qizmo on the same server nl.besmella.com:27500 and then connect to Finalnd I get 40ms ping...

Note: This is without any packet manipulation or compression enabled in Qizmo. Simply for routing.

Btw, is there a demand to have a qizmo on qw.dybbuk.de? I don't want to admin too much there but if it helps people I would invest some time to get it running again.

If you run a qizmo don't forget the -r option.
./qizmo -p 28000 -r 5.196.225.119:27000

Updated: qizmo @ 5.150.202.177:28000

For anyone wondering, -r is to ping the masterservers

Instead you can simply add the masters servers to the 'sources.txt' list. This is what I had previously done?

I'm not sure about the -r option and the master servers in the sources.txt file. I though the sources.txt would let you browse and ping servers in qizmo's serverbrowser. Perhaps it's the same thing..

according to ./qizmo -h
-r ip:port ... master servers to report this qizmo to

i guess it really need the ip and port of a masterserver. I tried it with second qizmo (at port 30001) and it was added to quakeservers.net serverlist automatically

eg..
./qizmo -p 28000 -r ip:port
ip:port should be set as well. (see my previous post)

It shouldn't be hard to set up... the more Qizmo's the better.

I will gladly provide Qizmos in those locations (if still needed). Question is, is there any 64bit version of Qizmo? I would like to avoid installing some i32 multilib b*shit.

Pretty sure 64-bit computing didn't exist when Qizmo was made

64bit computing is actually around for much longer than qizmo existed...but yeah, not in desktop computers ;-)
