In the effort of reaching more and more people, i've created a Discord channel dedicated to QuakeWorld. Discord is an irc replacement, and adds cool new features like voice chat. I've just created it, the plan is to improve it a bit before tweeting about it. So lets try. Discord is used by many players. Here is the invite link: https://discord.gg/0vmvMMyzOSMYrYbAyou can share it. edit: changed the link, it's permanent now. Why this and not that? Because what matters in the end is proximity. Most players from the arena fps community (which we belong, even if we live on our own bubble), chose Discord. Zaccubus from Unreal Tournament, jehar, KovaaK, just to mention some that are online now. Oh, and some developers are there too. So it makes sense to join where the players already are. Besides, it has some nice features: - Channel history is available at all times
- Uploaded files are available at all times
- flexible roles
- integrated voice channels
- app for desktop, web and mobile devices
we old dinosaurs like/prefer irc. Despiste being ugly, old, outdated, <insert bad stuff here>, Irc will always be our meeting place. But there's no harm in being represented in the "new" internet. never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

Why this and not that? closed and proprietary Plz, don't promote "vendor lock-in"s in community of freeware game.

Why this and not that? closed and proprietary Plz, don't promote "vendor lock-in"s in community of freeware game. Quake isn't freeware if we're to be correct. Quakeworld clients are freeware but still requires you to have a legitimite copy of the original game (to play "the game" . We don't disallow discussions or invites etc to closed source/proprietary stuff, however this is something done by a member of the community rather than the community itself, so no one is forced to use it. I personally prefer open source and non-proprietary things over closed/proprietary, but if we were to disallow discussions etc about it then we wouldn't be able to discuss Windows for instance. (Heck even all AMD/Intel processors these days have proprietary code and loaders that takes them out of FOSS. )

So it makes sense to join where the players already are. Which..is irc? and always has been? Using Discord over irc is more locked in than just using irc. You won't bring more people into qw by splitting people over both of these. Even though irc is easier to set up / more widely available than Discord, the existing irc channels for qw are terrible for new players. Since everyone just idles in them for street cred, it's always easier to go in game and .qw to find other players. I can't speak for everyone, but in the NA scene what we need is people who actually play the game. Forum posting and irc idling won't grow the game. jehar, KovaaK, just to mention some that are online now Funny, I haven't seen these people playing qw..
