looking for replies from someone who owns a 144hz, 165hz or 240hz gaming monitor Questions: - Have you tried several monitors with different hz? Is there a difference when playing Quake?
- When the fps are lower than the refresh rate, do you notice lag, or its still smooth?
- do you ever activate v-sync?
i had other questions but (a) the login session expired and lost the text and (b) eventually reading this and this was enough
never argue with an idiot. they'll bring you back to their level and then beat you with experience.

Asus ROG SWIFT PG278QR is probably the screen you want, it's 27" 165hz . Don't forget to atleast have a 900-series card to drive it. 700-series (atleast Geforce TITAN can do 144hz - don't know about 780/780ti) works, but limited to 144hz, 600 series at 120hz

I went from a 144hz asus vg248qe ( 24” ) to an Alienware AW2518Hf 240hz monitor ( 25”)
Both monitors 1080p
At first I wasn’t sure if there was an improvement but there definitely is.
I still have my 144hz in work and I can notice the blur / ghosting on it compared to the new 240hz monitor. Only noticed this when upgrading
I play with 1155fps and v-sync off.

- I own 2x120hz, 1x144hz and 1x240hz displays and i use them all from time to time.
- definitely notice the difference as you go higher in the refresh rate however 144hz is fine, there is no real advantage from 240hz to 144hz but it is definitely nicer to use.
- never use v-sync under any circumstance. turn it off and set your fps to a multiple of 77 with the ideal number being 1155fps (no gain beyond this value)

1. My old CRT monitor did around 75hz. When it died (blue beam went bad), I got a new 144hz monitor. Difference was clear as day. 2. IDK about lag (never came to mind), but when I played on my old computer, having 20-25 fps was quite painful (poor aim tracking). 3. Never in a FPS, but yes in a game meant for VSync, namely old school games in the NES, GENESIS/MEGADRIVE, VIC-20 and C64 era.

1) Yes and yes although there are diminishing returns 2) On modern hardware you should never get fps lower than refresh rate (at least with ezquake 3.5) but if you do it would be less smooth. Things like Gsync/Freesync can help with this (they automatically lower refresh rate to match framerate) but even with vsync disabled I have heard it suggested that this may introduce a small lag so you might not want that enabled in QW, this would be more for other games you might play. 3) No, vsync is inherently bad for competitive FPS

After 5 years of inactivity Im curious if there is anything in the market that is as good as Iiyama Vision Master 200 HZ CRT.
Because I might wanna buy one of these, if there is anything as good as the old CRT technology. QW was smooth as butter and from what I hear, there is always some lag/ghosting etc on even the best LCDs with 240 Hz out there.
Thoughts??

Microled could be the future
"OLED panels already boasts very high response times in the µs (microsecond) range. However, MicroLED can reduce this down into ns (nanoseconds) or a thousand times faster."

.prob nothing as good as the iiyama.. Mitsubishi Diamondtron has entered the chat Microled could be the future "OLED panels already boasts very high response times in the µs (microsecond) range. However, MicroLED can reduce this down into ns (nanoseconds) or a thousand times faster."
Remember SED monitors? That was going to be the light at the end of the (just beginning then) LCD tunnel. :/

(Edited 2021-11-27, 08:22)

IPS should be better, but seems you are compromising on your Quake performance. I wonder how milton decided to go for an IPS himself. Im assuming some Quake Champions pro use IPS because they get paid by brands. rapha uses the 500hz one because he got it for free but not sure he would use it if he would be able to choose. Anyone waiting for OLED panels? I may buy one next year if the burn in problems are proven to be not as bad, we'll see. The thing is I wanna see what the performance is after warranty expires, because who wants to pay for a monitor that has dead pixels by the time it expires.
