Can you guys confirm the release date of Quake I was 05/31/1996 ?

22 july 96 (full version of quake that is)

To the best of my knowledge, Quake was officially first released online (as a shareware demo) on the 22nd June 1996. The full CD version never appeared until early-mid July.
The previous day (21/06/1996) someone uploaded an almost-complete beta (beta3) version to a public FTP (ftp.cdrom.com) which was widely downloaded after word about it appeared on newsgroups.

The 31st of May date AFAIK originates from the gamespot article http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/action/quake/index.html stating a 31/05 release date at the head of the article, yet the actual time recorded at the bottom of the review page is:

"By Trent C. Ward, GameSpot
Posted Jun 22, 1996 8:00 am GMT".

Either the end of May date is entirely bogus, or perhaps is the date of a preview/beta testing version handed out to reviewers in the run-up to the Quakes actual release on 22/06/96.

Following newsgroup discussions about Quake over the period from late May to late June 1996 corroborates the actual release date of the game as being the 22nd June 1996.
