Demos

Ninjas receive a home
It's taken a while, but now the sub-site tricks.quakeworld.nu is finally here. The site has a pretty scarce inventory of trick demos at the moment, but eventually it will hopefully be the most comprehensive Quakeworld trick archive on the planet.

Head on over to tricks.quakeworld.nu!

Well done Ake vader. Great work.

Thanks.

Thanks for the effort. I would however like to see sweet pictures that were used at the now dead trick site by joulukuu? The pics had clear arrows showing how the trick is going to be played out and also used colors etc. to illustrate different kind of jumps. I know this requires a bit of extra work, but I definitely think it's worth the effort.

Also from that site, it would be nice to sort the tricks based on generally perceived difficulty and possibly add some tips on how to get it right quickly as all tricks aren't that easy to decipher from just a demo + pics. I did notice that you already had difficulty in metadata, just need to add it into the filter, maybe comments could serve as the place for tips.

All the columns should be sortable from column header and I would also like to see more advanced interlinking like clicking a Diff. value shows all demos with that value, clicking a mapname shows all demos from that map etc. The Download Cart column could be named more descriptively, like DL Cart, and could still have Add as the per row links.

That's all for now :] Keep on trucking!

I have thought of this and tried doing that procedure once, but i think it just takes too much time. In this case i rate quantity > quality(!). It would probably even be faster to avi the demos and embed them on the website right away. That's pretty time consuming too though now that you can just associate all QW demos with ezQuake, click "download demo" and be watching within two seconds.

My initial intention with the "description" part of the demo was to have a thorough guide on how to perform the jump. After having added 10 or so demos i was just bored with those descriptions though and hopefully such stuff can improve over time. You are 100% correct about the sorting functionality and stuff too.

Yes, I would love the pictures too. Maybe just add them as optional.

And I would like to point out that certain things might feel like a lot of work now that you are adding a lot of demos at once and building the site up. But I personally view the site as quite an important archive (as I did joulukuu's site) and therefore the pictures would be really useful. The difference with the avi and pics is that the direct avi doesn't show you the trick in clear steps.

Dunno what joulukuu would think about you ripping the pictures from the old site. Another possibility would be to just wait a while and then do a batch of pictures at once for a lot of tricks, it becomes so much more efficient when you are using the same tools all the time, that a big bunch of pics wouldn't take all that long. I might be streching here, but there is a possibility that I could do those pictures if we can agree on the legend / colors (or simply use the ones from you know where I don't think I'll be active enough to keep on doing it, but doing one batch to get things going and give a nice impression wouldn't be that difficult.

people should be able to record the demo into avi and upload it on youtube and place a youtube link on the site so you can see the link if the uploader wants that!!
just an idea that would make the uploader to put more work into it than the host?

I'm thinking of allowing people to upload vids directly to the site, which would be desired as what if Youtube starts flushing certain data and stuff. Being at work really makes me want to have such a feature when people add new demos.

Optional vids/pics are on the todo-list.

Actually I'm pretty sure the site was not done by me! Maybe you should ask kumikala (or miikka as he is also known) about that!

btw how about experimenting with PHP's GD functions Ake_Vader for the uploader to add the instructions of the tricks directly on the map?
