EQL15 is go!
The 15th edition of the European Quake League has kicked off today and with the new concept of just two divisions with teams of all kinds of skill levels in them, it promise quite a few new match-ups this season.
The 15th edition of European Quake League is under way and this season offers the new concept of having seeded all clans and instead of putting them in several different divisions based on their skill, the procedure this season is to make just two equally strong groups of teams.

The group stage is in round-robin style where all teams face eachother once within the group. After the group stages, the teams advance to gold, silver or bronze playoff depending on their final position. The group stages start today and the deadline for all those games is the 8th of April.

Waiting WO in games div0 vs div3 teams.
He-he.
2012-02-29, 07:12
Why? Its like 1 or perhaps 2 div0 teams per group. Imo the QW scene is one of the most mature online shooter scenes in the world but we cant manage a few one sided games?

I hope that most of the players dont share VVDs opinion here..

Given the current state of the scene (which isn't as bad as first presumed!), setting EQL up like this is one of the best decisions the admins have ever made. I'd be really surprised if the lesser teams actively refuse to play the better teams in EQL this season. I would understand that they won't actively search for pracs vs them, tho

Predictions:
Group A:
1. Slackers
2. Crazy 88
3. SD2 / DC / OClan depending on what lineups are used. Things are abit more certain in group b.

Group B:
1. Chosen
2. Paramedics
3. Suddendeath

As always we are looking for columnists to write previews, make interviews and spread the latest gossip. Contact the admins if you are interested.

"I'd be really surprised if the lesser teams actively refuse to play the better teams in EQL this season."

Can you explain this more I played SR in that cmt tourney years ago... it was a waste of time, probably moreso for them.

#6: If you really can't handle losing an online game for 40 minutes, you should quit playing asap and do something entirely different.
2012-02-29, 20:31
word riki.
seriously dudes, step it up.

#7 told by someone winning nearly every match $$$

I`d have prefered two divisions where group 1 meets div 1-3 and group 2 meets div 4-6. That would have been more enjoyable games for me at least.
And its a different if you lose 500+ to x or just 200 - 100. But now we have to deal with it.
2012-02-29, 20:50
#7 OK!

43 (5), 38 (3), 39 (5), 36 (3), 39 (5), 36 (3)
... are the numbers of teams in EQL 8 - 13 and the corresponding number of maps in the map pool. Notice how larger map pool always has larger amount of teams than in the season before, while smaller map pool always produces smaller number of teams.
36 (3), 32 (3), 24 (3) ... are the numbers for last 3 seasons...

#9: Are you serious? I've played tons of games knowing I would lose big, but never considered it pointless. But I'll stay by what I said, and it seems Gore agrees he's too. Guess peoples egos are just too big to handle a loss.

If everyone were as selfish, thinking that the scene should put everything aside and just think about their own needs without ever giving something back, this game would be long dead already. A QuakeWorld tournament is about competition. Of course it's also about having fun (competing isn't fun?), but if you can't handle the competition aspect of a tournement, you got nothing to do in a tournament.

#11: Your data isn't by far anywhere close to be sufficient enough to draw any conclusions. With that said, yes, I agree, a map pool of 5 would seem natural
2012-02-29, 21:44
#11 with such small differencies its very hard to draw any conclusions at all. Plus 5 pool seasons have been in the autumn all the time, perhaps ppl have been hungrier for qw?
2012-03-01, 08:26
If half of the team members where active so the others could have made their own team, this would have made EQL having almost a fourth division. Should have set a maximum per team "5" or something

#every number: I started quakeworld merely 2 years ago, and I've lost 90% of all the games I've played. LOSING IS A PART OF GETTING BETTER. Doesn't matter if Rikoll wins most of his games he plays, he's still right in what he says. There's nothing in life you can START with without sucking. Continue doing it, and you'll get better eventually. END OF DISCUSSION.

I hate losing, but I know I have to do it in order to improve and to learn. Perhaps next spawn I'll manage to trick a good player, and actually get a frag. EVERY FRAG IS AN ACHIEVEMENT!!! Remember that.

Not playing only because you'll lose is pure stupidity, and I have no idea why anyone with that mindset would ever play a competitive game.

#10: "OK!" seems like an sarcastic comment like: "Ok sure, I quit!". Noone plays this game for our sake. FOR SURE, we love everyone who plays this game as we desperately need players and we love when people play. But I don't see no bloody point in playing if there's no competition and if people play it only to have fun, and not to get better. That's like if there was ONLY bronze league players in Starcraft 2. I love that people play the game, but such mindset just pisses me off. Doesn't matter how old you are, how long you've played the game, how good you are. You should always strive for improvement. Always try to get better. No matter if you're Milton or if you're someone who just started the game. If you only play the game to jump around and not care about anything competitively, in my honest opinion: GTFO.

You can use the same argumentation to bash somebody who refuses to be the "1" in an 1on7 mode.

#11: Taking how many teams that got inactive into consideration it looks a bit different for seasons EQL9 and EQL10.

EQL9: 38 signed up and it looks like ALL teams played atleast a couple of games. About 4 went inactive.
EQL10: 39 signed up and 8 (!) teams didn't even play a single game.

From this we can draw the conclusion that tb3 is more popular and a 5 map pool make teams go inactive.
-------------------
People also seem to have some brainwashed view about EQL being the one and only 4on4 tournament that may exist. Go find some more people and create a rookie-tournament, preferrably run by some div3-ish dudes. It takes some hours of planning and some hour now and then, otherwise its just to execute. The more people that helps out running a tournament like that, the less time it requires for each person.
There are a lot of availible tournament sites etc, you can copy/paste rules from EQL (and change to your liking if necessary), or if you don't want to find a new website im fairly sure Zalon can set up a new "EQL"-page that can be modified with new colors/banner.

So if people did something useful instead with the time they spend on whining, we would have a lot of tournaments and useful stuff. Stating that they don't have time while they can play several hours of quake each week is just pure BS, its only bad planning and laziness.

#15 Many teams have more than 5 players because it is hard to spend enough time on qw so that 4-5 ppl can be active on the same nights throughout a season. Those other 10-25% activity guys are needed to be 4th when the regular guys lack one.
2012-03-01, 10:18
Well put dimman

It's not easy getting beaten badly, but set up targets for yourself and for your team to make it more interesting, rather than idle your way through the game because you feel like it's hopeless. I started playing qw in 2001 so I know what it's like to be a noob playing against the top teams. Back then we had tournaments like Smackdown where divisions didn't exist, and the games against the best were the ones that I looked forward to the most. These were the guys I loved watching in demos, and now I finally had the opportunity to play against them. I could also download the demo afterwards to see what we could've done better, and it was also awesome to see that we sometimes managed to do something good against the top clans like stealing several of the quads, ra takeover on dm3 etc. After just a few months we even managed to pressure Hellfire (top div1 clan) to a really close game on dm2 by using an ultra defensive strategy that took them by suprise

Set up goals for yourself and for your team in these games and try to reach them. Even if we were complete newbies back in 2001 I always told my fellow teammates to get at least 10 frags each against clans like SR, LA and CMF. After a while this changed to 20, then 30 and eventually we played even games against the top teams.
2012-03-01, 10:21
No hagge you stopped at 30 frags then you dreamt the rest
2012-03-01, 11:01
Now I have to tell Hagge to stop at 70ish in order to not demotivate our enemies too much!
2012-03-01, 11:54
No, I was actually good back in the days dimman. I might be shit now, but that's because I play on my crappy laptop 8)

"If you only play the game to jump around and not care about anything competitively"
That why I quit playing qw, wining/loosing or improving I feelt nothing... no fun. During 15 years I love playing/specing qw and read absolutliy everyting about this game. I loos it completly (meybe not 100% - cos my comnet hier)
But I did find biger better fun with new games and it is like years ago playing quake.
