Summer is heading towards the end
Summer is coming to an end and it's time to get busy again, both in the real world aswell as in the world of Quake.
In the beginning of this summer i graduated from the university here in Jönköping and i must say that it's a weird feeling to not have any exams nor lectures to attend in the future. It's a fresh start for me as i'm working fulltime for the first time of my life, hehe. I'm still living and working in Jönköping though, so the QW business should be possible to maintain without too much trouble. It's a bit weird to start working - all of a sudden you have to get up at 6am and come home at 17pm every day. Before you could sleep until at least 9.30am and maybe go for a lecture for two hours and be back at 12am again. :p

My only concern at the moment QW-wise is that I'm having some problems with playing QW at the moment as my gaming gear have broken, kind of. My mouse disconnects all the time and my headset suffers from a similar problem. This will get fixed in the future though, it's just a question of when. I'm not sure wether or not i'll participate in the next EQL season, but i will of course have to run it. I have begun making some preparations for the new season by moving from our old host on FZ as their server don't have that long time left now, and when it finally dies they won't try to revive it as we are the only ones left being hosted there. I thank them from the bottom of my heart though for their hosting through the years. Without them, Refragged and EQL probably wouldn't have been as good as they've been.

The new EQL seasons can be found on http://eql.quakeworld.nu/eql1 for example. We will later on redirect the new site to www.eql.nu of course, but i'll let you know when that happen, no worries.

Other than that, I've also tried to take on more central role here on Quakeworld.nu as Sassa left. For starters i've tried to just clean the site up a bit (mainly the forum, which you might have noticed), introduced a bit more straight (and democratic? :p) guidelines for the active admins in the forum and such things. When browsing the forum a bit more carefully, i realized that we have all sorts of topics all over the place, this is one thing i'd like to get rid of. That's why you'll see more of the "This topic has been moved" topics. It's not meant to piss people off, but rather to keep things in order so people know where to look for answers on their questions when using search functions and stuff. Some forums are gone too and this is because they've been too inactive to deserve their own forum. In the future we will be a bit more strict on issuing new forums for tournaments and so on. Instead of getting their own forum right away, admins will have to use the "Other tourneys" forum for starters. Might sound a bit nazi, but the other option is to end up with plenty of empty forums and i know which option sounds better to me.

Hm, well this is all for me for the moment. Just wanted to give a quick update on what's going on for me. Have a nice day etc!

ye, working sux..
when you arrive home it's like you're visiting your own house and it feels kinda new :/

Hehe, i've tried to talk them into creating a team for EQL at some points TED, but they just won't listen!

Forums really suck for archiving reference information and that's why they shouldn't be used for such. All reference info on subjects should be either in a sticky top post or a wiki article, like the one on Smooth Quakeworld. That's something that qw.nu, like so many forums should work on :/

about the gaming gear: maybe broken usb port? or a mouse eating the cables?

mm... maybe its time to advertise qw into the main gaming sites. you could post on esreality. mention ezquake's new version, nQuake, the importance of irc (mention #qwhelp, #qwrookie) "if u dont have irc consider connecting via web", qw features (very fast gameplay, skill, growing comunity, up-to-date client/server, up-to-date graphics...) ,Several "gametypes" available - i mean, dmm4, tricks, freestyle even ctf and tf and CA. And ofc the leagues, the topic 1tsen started in the forum about gathering newbies to get newbie teams for nqr or eql should be mentioned also...

the time has came to mass advertise maybe link to kyo-one trailer (nylons movie) to ppl see qw in action. (youtube? ok it hasnt the quality but it works)

go for it ake, ma man!

agreed with niomic. would be awesome if the answers found in the forum were in wiki for future reference.

one neat way to start doing it is to mention on the topic to get info from something like "TO WIKIFI" in order for interested ppl to search those keywords on the forum and, a little at a time, put that info on the wiki.

"less words, more action" i agree

One idea might be to start collecting a kind of QuakeWorld Guide into the Wiki environment touching on many of the same subjects as the forum and also giving users introductory to advanced reading / tips etc. This would be a combination of a lot of projects that have been done over the years, bunnyhopping guides, newbies guides etc. and with the Wiki platform it would be easy to get going and maintain in motion as opposed to all those one author articles.

But since the magnitude of this project is so large, it would require some planning and coordination. A guide would need a good navigation template and other more advanced features to be implemented as well.

definitily, its a huge project. we need simple things to start with. that's why I suggested "TO WIKIFI" above.

to add to #5:
don't forget to mention the new xs4all newbie-only server.

I _think_ it's my mouse that is causing the trouble. I've been too lazy to test if my USB webcamera works without problems over a longer period of time, so it still could be _all_ USB ports that are feeling ill (as i've tried them all with the mouse). Certainly hope not.

As for mass advertising, i've always tried to do some news on ESReality and will continue to do so when the major leagues and tournaments are running again. It's been quiet over there during the summer, but that's because there has only been rookie tournaments going on. Those tournaments are nice to have on ESR to gather new participants, but it's not _that_ interesting to know who won as if the Ownage 1on1 tournament would be running. Maybe i'm too cynical.

Time to go home, woho!
2007-08-28, 15:26
who won isnt the point, i didn't even mentioned the summer tournaments. im talking about the future. this and the next week are THE BEST weeks in the year to write the kind of "news" i mentioned in #5. because: a) all the tournaments are starting b) everyone (including ppl from other games) is back from the summer and c) there's news on quakeworld (nquake, xs4all newbie server, the thread by 1tsen on the forum...)

do it!
2007-08-28, 15:34
Of course, i see what you mean. I'm just a bit more picky when i write news on ESR as not all "minor" stuff (as in new servers, pure discussion news etc) is of interest to them - the hardcore Quakers will get those on qw.nu anyway.

I will try to spam them more when we get important news, like the leagues opening up etc.
2007-08-28, 16:12
soon they will open, thats why i said this and the next week are THe BEST!
and its natural u only post important stuff on esr... imo the time to talk about what i posted in #5 on esr has came!

#edit:
i think the news you (ake) posted in esr could be more informative to who reads it. sorry. and that stuff about discussion about allowing fakeshaft or not is... misplaced

this idea of wikifiyng useful information of the forum is very good. don't let it die.

some months ago i created the wiki article "smooth quake on Linux". I didn't know much about it, and i was trying to get some info to get ubuntu configured. but the info wasn't "all at one place" then I copy/pasted some stuff of the forum and put on the wiki. it worked good, and ruskie updated it. it isnt complete, note the "needs clarification" and "extract info and wikifi" links on the bottom

I think more wiki articles can be created about several issues/doubts that are posted on the forum

edit: forgot the link: http://wiki.qwdrama.com/Smooth_Quake_in_Linux
