I want a RELIABLE mouse that gives me NO PROBLEMS, no driver problems, doesn't break down easy, etc
I wan't to be able to assign mwheel button as double-click

I'm not super-elite gamer so I don't want to spend a lot of money. i've been using a standard logitech optical mouse, but I can't stand the damn drivers and the mouse buttons just sort of broke on me.

any suggestions?

Built-in support in Windows, I dunno. If you're looking for a simple mouse that gets the job done, I'd say the MS IE3.0 re-release, although there are some problems with reliability (the left button tends to erratically signal doubleclicks as the mouse gets older).

MS 3.0

Also MX510, MX518, DeathAdder.

I have all these mice and never had any problems in games. All are very reliable IMO.

logitech G1.
Has just perfect tracking, much better than a standard logitech optical mouse. 2 buttons + wheel, light, 800dpi.

I would even have used a smaller mouse, if there was smaller gaming mice than G1. Actually, i would have liked a pen like mouse, with the senor at the tip. Precision is in the fingers. Nobody paints etc with theyr wrist.

I like razor drivers, at least they work for deathadder. Not sure what drivers other Razer mice use.

The old logitech mouseman rocked more than any other mouse, but current mice.. hm.
I really do like the MS Laser Mouse 6000.
Only downside to it is that it gets dirty pretty much every day, but just needs a good whipe, and it's good to go.
Though I did buy that like 3-4 years ago, so it might not be current any more :f
But look for it. It's great!
Only good "big" mouse I've found.
(and I've tried razers mice.. yikes)

No gaming mouse thread should be complete without a link to this very comprehensive guide by ESReality that objectively compares popular gaming mice.

Short story: MX500/MX518 are the best and are the best bang for the buck, Microsoft, G5 and Razor mice are overpriced and not as great, creative mice are shit.

As for me, I use a Logitech MX1000 (wireless) and wouldn't trade it for anything, so I don't have anything constructive to add to the discussion. =)

Microsoft mice aren't overpriced (10-15 USD for the WMO and 1.1 which both faired well). You have to remember that most QW players don't move their mice that fast due to higher sensitivities (so many won't notice any clipped response or negative accel from almost all of those mice that experience those in the 1.25+ m/s range). And this review doesn't account for the feeling of the mouse. Also, the deathadder outperformed everything here too

Bad test in a way that it only measures when the mouse starts to skip. Yes, it is an important factor but far more important thing is the ergonomics.

If I used mouse according to only that test, I'd still use my old MX300. However I would have constant wrist pains (since the mouse is shitty to handle and way too small) and much worse overall performance than with MX510 or G5.

Yes, I agree laser mice are not that great regarding skipping. However as a low/med sens user I'm unable to make G5 skip unless really trying hard, something that never has happened in game. Well, can't make MX510 skip at all and it even works on mirror surface )

Regarding what mouse to buy... it's hard to suggest. If I had to buy one, I'd probably go for MX510/518 instead of my current G5.

The test is solely a test for each mouse's optical engine - it is not saying which mouse is the best overall. Of course, a lot of people, including myself, love the mx300 shape. Diamondback and Krait are both similar in shape and only slightly bigger and they are favorites. Most QW players will never go above 1.25m/s because of higher sensitivities so I doubt they'd be affected by the problems with most mice in that test, leaving it all up to preference as you said.

I would love to see Sujoy perform a test for lift-off distance on a variety of mouse pads.
Also, I still have a cs demo from a CAL match where my logitech g1 skipped on me twice on 180s I used 24'' for a 360 back then though

To sum it up, remove the really terrible ones from this test and then it's up to preference regarding the rest :]

I have constant wrist pain and use g1. Hm.. maybe i shoud give mx518 a try. I got rsi (repetive strain injury) in both wrist. Got it in 2001, and quited qw and had a 5 year break becouse of it. I used a logi pilot mouse when i got rsi, but i changed to a mouseman 98 wheel usb after some months. Realy comfy mouse, but since its is a ball mouse tracking sucked.
Even thou big mouses like the mouseman 98 is comfortable, i find small mices better for rl aim and bunnyjumping. Also in "headshot fps" games its realy effetive with a small mouse since i can place my pinky finger on the mousemat and "ancor" my hand to get realy steady aim, just a sec before i aim in on the head on long distance shots.

I think qw players move theyr mouse just as fast as cs players, only for shorter distances.

518 is an alright mouse, NOT with logitech drivers though
even gX mice have been good in my experience. The shape might be the same but they have a different feel.

It's not a bad test, as skipping is one of the traits of a mouse that can be objectively tested, and one where you can get some reliable data. Ergonomics is subjective, and one you can't really come up with a test for, except "go to best buy and try the mice out yourself". True, it's not the only thing you should be considering, but it's not something that you can ignore either.

Generally, I find objective information more useful than subjective information in my buying decisions. YMMV, of course. =)

G1 and G3 aren't anything like a 5xx mouse

Although of course, logitech drivers have always sucked from my personal experience >:E

Whats wrong with logitech's drivers?
only time i got negative accel with the G1 was with dinput. Without dinput (in_mouse 1) it behaves just perfect. Its basically a mx300 sensor with 800dpi instead off 400, witch may explain the lower malfuction speed the g1 have over the mx300. imo 800dpi is way better than 400, but i wouldnt go any higer with dpi.

Well, anyway i was thinking about buying a mx518, but now they have changed it. Damn logitech, what was wrong with mx518? why change it.

"..strange problem from time to time now with this new mouse, not sure how to explain it but if i move around fast for like a 180 degree turn the mouse just freaks out and i'l be either looking at the sky's or into the ground, like it skips or something. ... I got the same settings running in setpoint with this new mx518 as i did with the old mx518, same in-game sensitivity and all(38cm@360-1600dpi/1000hz/no accel).
Others having similar problems with this new "upgraded" mx518 ? ...."

Logitech G1 compared to a G5 (G5 on left)
Logitech G3 compared to a G5 (G5 on right)

G1 and G3 have the shape of the MX300 (G3 is a bit longer afaik). G1 uses some 800 dpi optical engine, G3 and G5 use the same 2000dpi laser engine.

G1 and G3 are similar to mx300 in shape while G5 is similar to MX500, MX510, MX518 in shape

I'm thinking of buying a mx510 in a few weeks time.

Unfortunetly for me, living in Brasil, it's kinda expensive but thats ok.

So, you guys dont recomend the setpoint drivers? Why is that?
