hey guys. recently i found that i was unable to play quake + the mission packs on my 8800 xp sp2 system until i got nquake which is wonderful. i wanted to ask if i may, how does one play the mission packs through nquake? is it a relatively simple process? thanks for your patience.
**to add in, i just want to play them, pure and simple. if nquake wont run them from a pak file are there other ones that will? like how doom frontends work**

Well, nquake uses ezQuake which is an QuakeWorld engine. QuakeWorld is meant for multiplayer. While you can play the missionpacks with it, no other mods will work (and many modern custom maps will be buggy). I suggest you use Fitzquake or aguirRe's glquake to play them. Simply extract the .exe into your Quake folder, create a shortcut on it with -rogue or -hipnotic (just shout if you need it more detailed) and run it.

hey thanks mate. yeah i will need help on the shortcut string to run them.i got both the programs u suggested. as long as it does the trick im happy and just out of curiousity how would one get the mission paks to work under nquake? i found a like to download the files but the link is dead.

For the shortcuts you need to enter something into the "target" field (rightclick on the shortcut -> properties -> the field with the .exe inside). Add " -rogue" after the "c:\your\path\fitzquake080.exe". For the other missionpack you use "-hipnotic" instead. Just make two shortcuts, one for Scourge of Armagon (hipnotic) and one for Dissolution of Eternity (rogue). Then you can launch the missionpacks with those shortcuts.
For QW I reuploaded that file here: http://shub-hub.com/files/mods_singleplayer/missionpacks.qwprogs.zip As far as I know at least the HUD will not work correctly though.

stupid question but is the file put into each missionpak folder and then a shortcut created in that or is all this done from the main directory?
E:\Games\Quake\fitzquake080.exe -hypnotic
theres the shortcut i made. i do get a glide2x.dll error which sucks lol

For Fitzquake you don't need that missionpacks.qwprogs.zip file. For ezQuake you would have to put each qwprogs.dat into the folders in your Quake folder. The one from /Scourge of Armagon into /hipnotic and the one froM /Dissolution of Eternity into /rogue. It's "hipnotic", not with an "y". To get rid of that error simply rename the opengl32.dll into opengl32_notneeded.dll or delete it.

Spirit, will you please stop spreading FUD about QW? Yes, it was meant for multiplayer when it was created in 1996, but nowadays it will also give you an excellent single player experience, and can you imagine this, some people actually prefer to play single player with a QW engine.
Most NQ mods worth playing have been ported to QW. And if anyone cared about those that have not, support for NQ progs.dat could be added to ezQuake in half an hour.

Spirit, will you please stop spreading FUD about QW? It's no FUD. Travail? Warpspasm? Quoth? Marcher? Bastion? Kona's? Apperently Zerstörer and Nehahra actually have some QW support but I bet it is the multiplayer only. You can't even play Beyond Belief or czg07 in QW, can you? FUD? I beg to differ. If you don't care about singleplayer (which seems so if you say "Most NQ mods worth playing have been ported to QW" then don't insult me but remain silent. If you can add nqprogs support to ezQuake, please do. I am sick of seeing people trying to get sp/nq mods to run in it with no success.

ok fitz works perfect thanks so much for that ive been missing this game for a long time, now i can enjoy it again. oh and for fitz, can you get free mouselook? or do you have to have the button held to then do it? and can bots be added as well? lol lots of questions i know but i prefer to ask and get it right. now, to use ezquake, with those spprogs.dat files, are they going into the Quake directory or into the actual nquake one? i would like to give them a bash to see if i can get them to work. also how would the shortcuts be done for this process to? thanks for u help

For mouselook: Create a new textfile in /id1 and name it autoexec.cfg (make sure it is not autoexec.cfg.txt, enable Windows showing extensions). Put "+mlook" inside. +1 Yes, so what? Can you change compatibility by will alone?

JoeQuake works great for mission packs. You can add custom wad textures and charsets as you can see here.

well id like to try to get ezquake to run them first before i try anything else.

ZenSelai, make sure you have a file structure like this:
ezquake-gl.exe hipnotic/pak0.pak <-- the Scourge of Armagon pak file hipnotic/qwprogs.dat <--- the qwprogs from the zip Spirit provided (you don't really have to rename it no matter what the readme.txt says)
Start ezquake and type in the console: gamedir hipnotic
Then go to the menus and start a new game. Same for Mission pack 2, except you'll have a 'rogue' directory and so you'll use 'gamedir rogue'

thanks for your reply tonik. i did what i believe to be correct based on what you have, however its not loading. no crashes its just loading up default main game quake.
i have:
ezquake-gl.exe hipnotic/pak0.pak as well as qwprogs.dat rogue/pak0.pak as well as qwprogs.dat
when i do the console command nothing appears to have altered or changed. now, in the Dissolution of Eternity folder from what Spirit gave me, there is a 2nd file called 2_qwprogs.
i must be missing something simple.
just as a note those 2 sub-directories only have those 2 files so unless i need any others in there thats it.

when you do the "gamedir hipnotic"- command it should report something like "opened /quake/hipnotic/pak0.pak, xxx files added". if it doesn't do that there's something not right i think.

definately not getting a written response at all. i bet its something easy lol

Ouch, it seems that choosing 'new game' from the menu resets the gamedir back to "qw".
let's try this then:
gamedir hipnotic deathmatch 0 map start
But ezQuake is supposed to print that "opened /quake/hipnotic/pak0.pak, xxx files added" message, unless it's changed in a recent ezQuake version which is unlikely.

nah isnt working at all. not even that.

Ooooooh, this moment is so great I want to have sex with it!
I am guessing that your ezQuake config is set to "console input is treated as chat, not as command/variable". I dunno where to change that from the top of my heed but try adding a / infront of the lines Tonik posted:
/gamedir hipnotic /deathmatch 0 /map start
For bots you won't have much luck I think. Maybe Frikbot has support for the missionpacks, I am really not sure.

it's called cl_chatmode and should be set to either 0 or 2, if you don't want it be handled as chat

any other suggestions as to getting ezquake recognised? and why does one of the mission packs only have one file, but dissolution has 2?
Member 1011 posts

hi! i followed the instructions: ezquake-gl.exe hipnotic/pak0.pak <-- the Scourge of Armagon pak file hipnotic/qwprogs.dat <--- the qwprogs from the zip Spirit provided (you don't really have to rename it no matter what the readme.txt says) Start ezquake and type in the console: gamedir hipnotic and the missionpack loads and everything seems to work fine til i found out that i am getting stuck on map2 so i searched the web for a walkthrough and found out that if i shoot the cubes right from the exit on the first level (= map 1) nothing happens.. i also can't destroy the pipe near the explosive cube with the rocketlauncher as i have seen in the walkthrough video. What i first noticed was that i was not able to play the game on hard skill level, because when i jump into the room through the window there is no way for me to get any further or out of this room except starting a new game and select another skill difficulty. In the console there are messages that might explain my problem. thank you in advance for helping me!
