I'm working on a new eQuake version.. Big news being ezQuake is now the standard client (still fully optional to choose between ez and fuh, however). I need some beta testers to try out the windows installer and to try it out in game. I also need some help with selecting what to include in the new version (configs, models, textures, etc?) - I have not been very active since the last eQuake release AND last but not least, I need some help tweaking the ezQuake default configs.

current changes on equake-lite: eQuake Lite v1.2, 2006-03-18:
* Replaced FuhQuake with ezQuake (OpenGL version only). * Updated some configs. * Removed most of the loc files. * Removed qwprogs.dat. any input on that? i'm also thinking about making an "equake-full" or something, including all the equake addons (and all the new textures and stuff) and make a big installer out of it. most new game demos / patches etc nowadays are huge anyways, a 200-300mb equake won't scare off newbs wanting everything in 1 file.. (this "full" version would only get released as a windows installer, to save space for hosting services)

replace fuh with ez? why?

Why remove the loc files? They are small and harmless, and very nice once you play those kenya maps noone ever remembers. (Yes, I do actually play dm7 occasionally!)
It might be a good idea to include the SW version of ezquake aswell. Not that new players will want to use it, but oldschoolers might still want to be able to get the whole pack and go with legoquake without additional downloads.
Peppe: Isn't that kinda obvious? ezquake has a bunch of features that fuhquake doesn't, and supports independent physics. Teamplay is nothing. Aim is everything. OBEY YOUR AIM

Why remove the loc files? They are small and harmless, and very nice once you play those kenya maps noone ever remembers. (Yes, I do actually play dm7 occasionally!) this is equake-lite though, it's not really meant to be a definite version of quake, it's for those times when a person with slow internet is needed for a game, and does not have quake it's meant for times of crises!! but i might reconsider It might be a good idea to include the SW version of ezquake aswell. Not that new players will want to use it, but oldschoolers might still want to be able to get the whole pack and go with legoquake without additional downloads. the software version is still in the regular equake pack, i just thought i'd keep things light in equake-lite but it's not a final decision so i might change my mind replace fuh with ez? why? because it's an accepted client that has everything fuhquake has, and is still being developed.

i just added the remaining locs to equake-lite
the SFX got 160kb bigger the installer got 190kb bigger
not sure if kenya locs are worth 160/190kb
the software version of ezquake added roughly 600kb - that's an increase of about 10% in size
that puts equake-lite installer at 6.32mb <- that's 21 minutes of downloading for a modem user equake-lite SFX becomes 5.41mb <- 18 minutes of downloading
that can be a bit too much if he's in a hurry!
my goal is to keep it below 15 minutes of downloading (5kb/s)
now without the software ezquake and without kenya locs, we get the SFX down to 4.77mb, which is just below 16 minutes of downloading
EDIT:
after thinking about this for a while, i've decided to put software ezquake + all loc files in equake-lite. 18 minutes of SFX downloading is acceptable
i might release the equake-lite SFX as a 7zip SFX as this puts down the size of the package by 500kb

does anyone even think an installer for equake-lite is needed?

hm, i havent thought about the modemusers for a while. Lets all take a moment and do that. *done* Still, this is nice, there might be times in need! More then one version is nice, so that ppl can chose how much time to spend on downloading! btw, arent it suppose to be e Quake?

i still want input on this one:
i'm also thinking about making an "equake-full" or something, including all the equake addons (and all the new textures and stuff) and make a big installer out of it.

I think equake-full is a great idea. Simple as that. As you say, most people are used to big downloads nowawdays, so it would be great if you could gather some configs from TEH STARPLAYERS (omg!) and some different HUD layouts, etc etc. 24 bit textures is a must imho. (mainly for new players. we don't wanna scare them off with the first glance, now do we?) And yo, fuck that ANTI-CAPS thing. Edit: It has been fucked! Rejoice! \o/ Teamplay is nothing. wouldn't be legal, equake has never been i released lequake (legal equake) a while ago but it flopped badly maybe it was the name?

you could always release it as a patch against the original quake1 cd that makes a new cd that you can burn

that does sound like a whole different project!

i kind of want to wait for the new version of ezquake and fte before releasing the next equake but i figure i can just release another version when they do..
equakesv same thing there, want a new mvdsv which supports qtv but doesn't crash/allow people to access root etc...

I have just recently created such an installer for an upcoming lan party, trying to convince some retired qw players to try qw again. As there was no ezQuake-Installer available, i built one myself using NSIS. Maybe i can help with selecting some stuff... An idea i liked for retired or new players was to include some high skill demos from e.g. the recent Duelmania matches to show the people how cool it looks to master this game perfectly :-) I included the following things: - 24bit textures (for bmodels too) from the Quake Retexturing and Remodeling Project - conchars from the eQuake installer (i really like moon[Drunk]'s) - weapon models from Plague's PAK - .locs and .lits of course. i think also from the eQuake installer. - HUD Elements from the QRACK engine - a new head gib model. don't know where from. ...and it looks like this (click on thumbnail for 1280x1024 version):

not too sure if including demos would be such a great thing, having links to specific demos on a "get started" site or something like that would prolly be better

or better with a movie with topnotch grafix from a demo?

Sassa, you still can't spell "graphic" And those pictures might have abit to much effects and scares them

the NSIS installer code has been improved quite a bit today so people wanting to do their own quake packs should be able to use the next equake versions installer source easily

i would also vote for including some demos in a new FULL equake version. first thing i would do if i just wanted to try an old game would be installing and then click the exe to see if it works out of the box. then i would navigate through ingame menus and probably not only me, but alot of todays gamers would know from any other mpg that under "demos" they would find a replay of a game. and that could be very addictive then, fired up found demos, watched and....wanna get a bit into this game (3-4 1v1 mvds should be enough, criteria to select demos would of course be hard ;>, should be an balanced game, no ownage, not cs only, no +forward only, and perhaps unique very entertaining styles to see whats possible in qw. dm2 locktar, aero reppie etc) whole include demo suggestion aimed at getting new people easy addicted ;>
