As many of you may have expected, and may even have felt its consquences ( resulting in a 50:0 loss), mingping has a major issue.
To see and feel the issue do the following:
- Go to a server of your choice preferable to one where you have a good ping.
- Set cl_nopred to 1, and walk around. If your connect is stable it should be perfectly smooth, visualy. The feeling itself could be different from what you are used to.
- Now look up ur ping in the scoreboard, i will take 25 as an example, and set cmd minping (your ping + 2), with my 25 ms example it would be cmd minping 27.
- Now walk around and see the difference, if you cant dont blame me . What you should see is stuttering in your movement, wich is disguised by using prediction.
The higher you set minping the more severe the stuttering will get.

So what does this mean in games ?
Take for example player1 - 13ms, player2 - 52.
player2 will be bitching about ping difference etc, you know the ushual whine.
Now player 2 will set minping to 49, he still wants some advantage doesnt he, but ! what he doesnt know is that minping will only affect him. Thereby giving an, imho not insignificant, advantage to player2. He might have the higher real ping, but he does not have the stuttering.
There for, if someone wants to play you with minping, make shure he feels it too :p.

Well, I can only agree, that's exactly how it felt when I was playing Avenger on Wargamez, where he has ping 52, and I have ping 13, and he forced minping 50. It felt like everything went in slowmotion, heavy movement, interpolation(?) of flying rockets/grenades were gone, like they were stuttering too. It really does feel like shit. Felt better with minping 40, but even more smooth when I played vs Insane on polish server with actual ping 40.
ready!

I have always said that puposefully reducing the gaming experience is plain silly. What's next, someone plays with a slow TFT display and we set sv_maxhz to 60? Someone uses an old ball mouse -> sv_max_mrate 120? You choose a server as fair as possible and that's it, after that everyone should play with what they got.

The minping problem might have something to do with the fact that in reality qw only has discrete ping times like 13 26 39 etc. If you set minping 30 then it is probably going to process a certain amount of packets at 26 ms and the rest at 39 so that the average is set to 30. This kind of jumpy ping always feels horrible minping or no minping. Same can happen if your real ping to the server is just on the limit that some packets make it for frame n and the rest make it only for n+1.

hm, are you saing that seting minping to 39 wont feel "bad" for someone with 26 ping then?

Well I'm just guessing here... Someone could test different values if it's smooth with any of them. Or a programmer who knows exactly how it works could explain it.

In my experience minping feels best on multiples of 13(eg 13, 26, 39, 52, 65, 78, etc). If it's not set to one of those it sort of feels like pinging 45 where 39 or 52 would be smoother and more predictable.

I've never used minping, so I cannot really comment on that.... but if it is anything like Qizmo Lag? (say.lag x) then it must really suck because from my experience with Qizmo lag.... it actually feels twice as worse as real lag.... although i have read somewhere that minping is meant to be better than Qizmo Lag.

Sassa has a good point.... you should have just played via a Qizmo in another country
