As some of you may know, I play QW on an old Macbook Pro running Windows. Not a match made in heaven. But it just got a lot better: I just figured out I could overclock my screen refresh rate in the NVidia Control Panel.

I have been playing QW at 60 Hz for two years when all the time I could be playing at 103 Hz! (With 104 Hz and more the screen starts flickering etc.)

EDIT: got it! I used CRU to add the custom resolution.

I just used Nvidia Control Panel > Display > Change resolution > Customize...

... and then make a new resolution where resolution is same as before, but refresh rate is higher. I just upped the Hz count and tested until the screen started getting vertical flickering lines, and went back to the highest refresh rate without problems.

Played a little last night with no problems at 103 Hz. Shotgun aim is already considerably better.

Do you use the screen on the macbook or do you have an external screen connected to the macbook?

The MBP screen, no external. I always thought it was limited to 60 Hz, being a laptop and all, but turns out it isn't.

Oh, and another thing: I managed to overclock the resolution from 1440x900 to 1680x1050 too, still running fine at 103 Hz, using Nvidia Control Panel as described earlier, just upping the resolution as well as the refresh rate.

The MBP screen (and GPU) is capable of a LOT more than Apple allows.

Nice. Just be careful with input lag. Everytime you use a flat panel in a different resolution, other than the native one, you will increase input lag.

Hm. Any way to measure this? Resolution is not that big a deal...

I would be absolutely terrified to overclock anything on my MBP. It cost way way way too much.

I tried this on my work laptop... Dell Latitude E7450... wouldn't boot afterwards...

I will try it on my Alienware 13 later...

Hehe, yea. Not gonna happen though. Small apartment, no room for anything but a laptop.


I've been running 100 Hz on Windows 7 Boot Camp on my MBP for many weeks now, no problems with monitor or playing Ezq. And HUGE difference from the 60 Hz days.
