Hi dear quakers! I am back again with another interview. Today with
Zalon, the admin of QuakeWorld.nu, organizer of the later QHLANs and a key ingredient in most QuakeWorld projects. Author of his own mod, leader of Fallen Angels - a clan more than a decade old. A man with his fingers in many pies, a Quake1 CV as long as my... Lets dive in to learn more about this wunderkind.
Hello Zalon. I guess every oldschooler should know who you are, but we got a lot of new players so introduce yourself for our readers. My name is Martin, I'm from Denmark, I've been playing QuakeWorld online since 1999. I don’t play that actively anymore, but I've been involved in quite a lot of community projects the past few years.
1999... That's so long ago. Have you got any special moments in your gaming career?I think some of my most special memories with QW dates back quite a while. I remember the first LAN I attended here in my home town. All we did was play Quake, we had quite a few good Danish QW players living here, so me and my friends got to see some quality games. Later it was joining my first clan and participating in the Danish Quake League, I had never played a clanwar before that. I mean, me and my friends had a clan, but that was mostly just to be able to wear a clantag, we didn't know anything about the scene and the clan matches up until then. When it comes to achievements, I think it was around 2007 where I started practicing a lot and got to play in Veterans and we got promoted to Div1 (There were 6 divisions back then). That's also kind of the only point in my QW "career" where I've been somewhat skilled. My activity quickly died out due to other obligations though. One of my fondest memories is visiting QHLAN for the first time, I felt just like a kid again, going to my first LAN. It was all about Quake, and everyone cared just as much about the game as I did - It was awesome!
Nice and heartfelt response, always appreciated! Let’s move on to your admin career.I Actually got into admining back in 2001, when they were looking for someone to help out running the Danish Quake League. Then the league was transformed into a more general gaming league, as other games than Quake (1/2/3) started getting very active at the time. At some point we couldn't gather enough Danish players to keep the QW section running so it was closed down. I didn't admin QW leagues again until around 2007 I reckon.
You are by many considered "the man behind the curtains", you even said that your main job was as an "organizer" in the recently released Team Quad movie. How did you go from being a active player fighting in the trenches, to working behind the scenes?Well, I still play actively in almost all leagues and tournaments that come up, some for fun, others to show support for the project. I'm currently active in EQL with my clan
Fallen Angels and
Thunderdome.
The job-title, at-least it has been like that for the past 5 years, but it's kinda by coincidence, I join some project and some time later I'm the only guy there. Maybe people have a hard time working with me?
In regards to running tournaments and leagues, I joined EQL to help with setting up the website preseason, and doing some small fixes that was needed at the time. Soon I ended up doing admin jobs and coverage. During later stages in the season I was somewhat in charge when Itsinen was away. It's the same with QHLAN, I joined to help organize the tournaments, but when Lornelin stepped back and it looked like there wasn't going to be another QHLAN, I helped organize the LAN itself.
You have done a lot for the QuakeWorld community. Are you looking for people to engage more and assist you or the scene? There's a lot of people who are actively doing stuff for QW now, I think it's nice to see all the promising new projects that are underway. For my own projects, I've got the people I need to help me with that. I would however love to see more people producing editorial content.
So if you want to help covering current events in the QuakeWorld scene you are welcome to contact me on the QuakeWorld.nu Forum or IRC @ #QuakeWorld. It’s soon time to wrap this up, but I’m sure our readers would love to know what you got cooking right now. Are you preparing something new for QuakeWorld.nu?Heh, I've heard some rumors that I was... And people have been asking me about it, but to be honest, it's not more than planning, and I've been doing that since 2008. I am however working on other QW projects but I don't want to comment on what they are, as I really hate when people do that. I tend to not make my projects public until I'm certain that it is going to happen. I hate being teased myself - it has happened numerous times in QW when people announce some awesome thing that they are working on, but before we get to see it their motivation dies out. Personally, I'm still waiting for fde3 and fuhquake 1.0
That’s the unfortunate consequence of any vibrant and volatile environment. Some might say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, but without good intentions many cool projects would probably never have seen the light of day in the first place.
Is there some final words you would like to say before we end?
Shoutout to all my friends in the scene and thanks to everyone who help keep the scene alive!
P.S If you want to help me or know someone who would be interesting to interview, send email with tips on jan.drly@hotmail.cz-Thanks to
