No, this is no replica of the news below, but rather an article about the fact that
Quakecon , that is taking place at Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas from August 2-5, has announced Quakeworld as a part of a Quad Damage tournament that shares a $100,000 prize purse.
The 12th annual Quakecon tournament that is arranged at Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas from August 2-5 features a $100,000 prize purse and apart from a Enemy Territory: Quake Wars 6on6 tournament they have also announced a Quad Damage Tournament that spans all four Quakes in the series. This requires players to master all four games in the Quake series and Quakeworld would be one of them, along with Quake 2, Quake 3 and Quake 4 of course.
“For over 10 years gamers have debated who the best overall QUAKE player is, and this year we’re giving our competitors the chance to stake that claim in our world exclusive Quad Damage tournament,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. “We’re also giving teams the chance to be crowned the first ever Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars champions, and thanks to NVIDIA’s $100,000 total prize purse, the competition will be more intense than ever.”
It's a $100,000 prize purse but that's obviously spread over all the tournaments on Quakecon. How much of that money that makes it into the Quad Damage Tournament is yet to be revealed. We don't know any settings or allowed software for the tournament either, but the tournament administrators have been urged to check up on the new stuff for Quakeworld, such as ezQuake, via a member in their staff called Syncherror who regularly receives feedback from the community on
ESReality. Anyway, the tournament will probably be fine and this will truly reveal who is the "Quake Master" out there according to the official statement on the
Quakecon website.
This year brings a new twist to QuakeCon's classic 1 vs. 1 competition with the inaugural Quad Damage Tournament. Spanning all four QUAKE games, this year's champion will need to be a master of a variety of weapons, maps, and play-styles - from QUAKE’s lightening fast action and dominating rocket launcher, to the more strategic gameplay and precision weapons found in the later QUAKE games. 256 contestants will be divided into 4 man groups with each player battling the others in a set of round-robin 1 vs 1 matches. Two phases of round robin play will reduce the competition down to the top 32 players, who will then battle it out in a single-elimination, best of 3 bracket to determine who is truly the QUAKE Master.
It will be interesting to see which Quakeworld players can show up. Hopefully some of the americans are going as according to
a Quakecon post on QWDrama. This could both put some spotlight on the fast gameplay, skilled players and updated engines that Quakeworld has nowadays which could make seasoned players from other games in the Quake series want to give it a shot. We will of course keep you posted on when the rules are released for the tournament.
