See [[Smooth Quake]].
If u own a crt screen it depends. If you own a 19', u can use 154hz at 640*480 - which is very smooth. u can use 800*600 at 144hz... But you might wanna use higher resolutions. Some state you can use the resolution you want (if your graphic card can handle it and have at least 100fps on timedemo fps) and use 75hz.

If you own a tft screen, see [[TFT]]. If it's widescreen (16:9 or 16:10), read the [[Widescreen Guide]].
This is one of those things you got to test yourself. Use [http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/ Refresh force] to tweak your screen Hz if you're not confortable with the nvidia drivers.

  • Where do I find actual people to play this game?

You can go to quakeservers.net or go to #qwrookie on Quakenet IRC. As an alternative, you can use the ezQuake in-game server browser. go to menu "multiplayer/servers" and refresh the servers there (hint: use spacebar, enter and keypad)

  • The qw scene is located mainly at IRC, how can I get in there?

The easiest way is to connect via webchat. Or, install a irc client and connect to the Quakenet, then join #quakeworld, #qwrookie and ask there.

FAQ

  • What resolution should I use?

See Smooth Quake. If you own a tft screen, see TFT. If it's widescreen (16:9 or 16:10), read the Widescreen Guide. If you own a crt screen it depends on your screen. Higher refresh rates result in a smoother gameplay. You MUST tweak the refresh rate if you own a CRT screen. This is one of those things you got to test yourself. Use Refresh force to tweak your screen Hz if you're not comfortable with the nvidia drivers. Common resolutions/refresh rates are 640*480@160hz, 800*600@120hz, 1024*768@100hz.

Hints

  • Timedemo fps

Timedemo is a way to benchmark your pc on quake series games. you can use any demo you want. At the end of the demo, the average fps you have will be displayed. "fps" is a small demo in which many players are firing and it is very demanding, making it the standard demo for testing fps in qw. This was first introduced by Def in Def Quakeworld Package. It's recommended to have at least 77 fps in "timedemo fps". To run it, type timedemo fps in the quakeworld console. If you don't have it, you can always use quake's default demos: demo1-3. timedemo demo1 for example.
