Bravado
Bravado is a map first released in beta form in 2012 for 1on1 and 2on2 play, by foogs, who at the time was using the nick ‘fenris’.
Initially accepted with enthusiasm, the map has played a part in minor community tensions and controversies. A couple years later it gained ground and is now widely accepted.
History
The inspiration for the RA room came from a Quake 4 influence, specifically the MH room in Placebo Effect, a competition favorite.
This influence carried into in his next map Subterfuge. [1]
The map was eventually left in a near-complete state under the name bravadob5.bsp
for a while. At the time, there were no bars at the GL window into MH, and the top spawn was in a recess along the catwalk with holes in the floor, making it vulnerable to rockets coming from the GA room.
As Foogs had lost the source to the map, Lurq decompiled the bsp, rebuilt and cleaned up the map, implementing some item tweaks, a GL spawn closer to its incarnation in previous betas and the addition of the bars in that area, producing the version we now know today. He also provided colored lighting.
As part of his 2020 map tweaks, Dirtbox swapped the MH and Quad spawns in
bravado2020.bsp
, which had been suggested before the final version.
The aim was to rebalance the strength of the RA side. [2] This version did not gain traction, however.
