I am off to Dreamhack
So I am sitting in a cafe at the John F. Kennedy airport in New York City. Already past the checkpoints, security gates, and de-magnetization scans to ensure that everything about me is sterile and harmless before I embark to another country, and already I see the scandinavian faces in the Icelandair wing of Terminal 7. Not so many of them, but during an ordinary day in New York City it is not often that you see fat blond haired, blond bearded guys (with mass everywhere, not just their stomach) and stunning north european women. Or maybe it is just my imagination.
Anyway, this is the first day of my first journey to my first european country and my first european LAN, and I am excited And while I am waiting for my New York Strip steak to be served (thankfully the extra-large beer portion was instantly delivered) I can type away on my two hour battery life laptop.

I expect a couple of hours of free time which I will spend sight seeing in Stockholm, before I rendezvous with reppie for the bus ride to Jonkoping. Then, the next day (Nov 30) will be the registration and group games at Dreamhack for the QuakeWorld tournament. Groups 1 through 6 will begin playing their games on that day (games start 15:00 and 19:00 CET which is 9AM and 1 PM EST), which include familiar players like ParadokS, Adrenalin, riker, Ake Vader, locust, reppie, bps, and others. Of course I will be trying my darndest to contribute to the effort of broadcasting these games live to the rest of the globus, since I will have nothing else to do that day (unless I find a really nice sauna in Jonkoping). The next day, the last two groups will begin playing with players like LocKtar, nabbe, Tobes, eta, and of course myself. Those games will begin at 10:00 CET which is 4:00 AM EST, so the LocKtar and nabbe fans in North America will have to wake up really early to watch them live, but if you know anything about me, you will know that demos will be on CHTV asap!

Then, the playoffs will begin sometime around 14:00 CET (8 AM EST), and continue until the Grand Finals, which are scheduled: December 1, 20:00 CET (2:00 PM).

Well, my New York Strip is here, but I'll be back

Would be cool to get eztv streaming from their servers.

"to watch them live", from where? Eztv streaming or even qizmo cams at servers would be too cool to be true.

I was talking to Dronar the last week about servers and stuff related, and these are the things he mentioned:

1) games will be played on computers that do not have an internet connection, therefore connecting to them trough qizmo or by your client will be impossible.

2) it will also be impossible for me to connect my EZTV or any other QTV there. Worried now?

.

.

.

.

3) ...They will be providing EZTV from one of their machines that can connect to the LAN and also to the internet. Therefore we will have all the matches QTVed and exposure should be pretty nice.

Dronar said he'd contact me later the next week (it means this week) but I'm yet to hear from him. Hopefully he does that soon and we can have the QTV configured in good time before the events and I can publish the information on the news section.

Welcome to the land of the blondes!
If you have alot of time to kill in Sthlm, just let me know and I´ll go grab a coffee with you.

Will you arrive at the same time as Reppie at the LAN? (He said like 3am tomorrow ;F)
2007-11-29, 09:58
I'm on the same bus, leaving 22:50 - arriving 03:25! So before I've booked us (rep, phil, me) into Icebar on Vasagatan to kill some time
2007-11-29, 10:22
Are you having one of the dedicated QW LAN seats, Bps?
2007-11-29, 10:23
Looking forward to reading about dreamhack phil. Good man.

I have just arrived in stockholm. And gotten myself a nice big cup of coffee (I am now 24+ hours without sleep, and will have to reach 48 hours until next sleep). The coffee here, at the airport anyway, is the equivalent of $5... I thought Reykjavik's rate of $3.75 was high (I was there a couple of hours ago for my layover... there weren't any direct flights) -- a cup about 2x (maybe 1.5x) as large as this one, in NYC starbucks, will be about $2.50 which is considered expensive there.

Ok, enough about coffee drink prices. It is totally overcast here, and I'm ready to meet some swedes to lighten it up
2007-11-29, 12:21
coffee from pan = 15-20SEK
coffee from (cappuccino) machine = 30-40SEK

Thats the usual pricing in most of Europe. at least the quotient between those 2.

Anyways, everything is expensive @ airports.

Phil, you've already learnt the two most fundamental truths about sweden (and scandinavia) - very expensive and shitty weather 9-10 months of the year... welcome!

Enough about the Coffee prices phil
More importantly what about the drink prices ? Might be the decider on whether I go to QHLan or not

Oh man pleura ;> let's not even go there - makes my scandinavian moodiness take over. But seriously, prices are generally high and the only places you can get "cheap" drinks are reserved for people with student-ID:s. The only reason to come here would be for the hot quakeworld action - or i guess the long-legged blond chicks ... if you're into that sort of thing ...
2007-11-29, 15:13
Phil will there be live commentary as well?
2007-11-29, 15:34
I'm not sure if Dreamhack arranges any live commentary. Someone on the net should do it though if (when) QTV comes on.

"or i guess the long-legged blond chicks ... if you're into that sort of thing".

Anyone who doesn't appreciate the general hotness of swedish chicks belongs into either a circus or a mental institution. I have yet to decide!

Random shit-talk aside: Welcome to Euroland Phil. Have fun at Dreamhack and keep us posted about the shit happening there. I for one very much appreciate this blog!
